Hadith of Abdur Rahman ibn Awf al-Zuhri (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith Number: 1667
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that a tribe of Arabs came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah Munawwarah. They accepted Islam, but the climate of Madinah did not suit them, so they were afflicted with severe fever and this calamity befell them. Consequently, they left Madinah Munawwarah, and on the way, they encountered some of the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). The Companions asked them, "Why are you returning?" They replied, "The climate there did not suit us and we have developed stomach illnesses." The Companions said, "Is there not an example for you in the person of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" At this, the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) became divided into two groups: some declared them hypocrites, while others said, "They are not hypocrites, rather they are Muslims." Upon this, Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: «﴿فَمَا لَكُمْ فِي الْمُنَافِقِينَ فِئَتَيْنِ وَاللّٰهُ أَرْكَسَهُم بِمَا كَسَبُوا﴾ [النساء: 88] » "What is [the matter] with you [that] you are two groups concerning the hypocrites, while Allah has made them fall back [into error and disbelief] for what they earned."

Abdullah bin Aamir says that once we were going to Makkah Mukarramah. In the middle of the night, the voice of Ibn Mutarraf—the camel driver—reached the ears of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) made his mount sit down and entered among the people. Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) was also present there. When dawn broke, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Now stop, now be silent because dawn has broken; now remember Allah. Then Sayyiduna Umar al-Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) noticed the socks of Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: You are wearing socks? He replied: I wore them even in the presence of the one who was better than you. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I ask you by Allah, take off these socks, because I fear that if people see you, they will start following you.

Sayyiduna Amir Muawiyah, Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are two types of hijrah: one is hijrah from sins, and the other is hijrah towards Allah and His Messenger. And hijrah will not end as long as repentance continues to be accepted, and repentance will continue to be accepted as long as the sun does not rise from the west. And when the sun rises from the west, a seal will be set upon every heart and people's deeds will suffice for them (meaning at that time no deed will be of benefit nor will there be any need for it)."

Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that on the day of the Battle of Badr, I was standing in the ranks of the warriors. I looked to my right and left and saw two young boys standing on either side of me. I thought to myself, "How good it would be if I were between two brave men!" Meanwhile, one of them pinched me and said, "Uncle! Do you recognize Abu Jahl?" I said, "Yes! But nephew, what do you have to do with him?" He said, "I have heard that he insults the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). By Allah! If I see him, I will not leave him until one of us dies." I was amazed at his words, and while I was still amazed, the other one pinched me and said the same thing to me. After a short while, I saw Abu Jahl moving among the people. I said to both of them, "That is the man you were asking me about." As soon as they heard this, both of them rushed at him with their swords until they killed him, and then returned and informed the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) of it. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked, "Which of you killed him?" Each of them said, "I killed him." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked, "Have you cleaned your swords?" They said, "No." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) looked at them and said, "Both of you killed him," and he decided that the belongings of Abu Jahl would go to Mu'adh bin Amr bin al-Jamuh. The names of those two boys were Mu'adh bin Amr bin al-Jamuh and Mu'adh bin 'Afra.
