Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them)
Hadith Number: 2490
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that a person once presented the daughter of Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) for marriage in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She is my foster niece, and all those relationships that are prohibited due to lineage are also prohibited due to fosterage."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that once Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) presented the daughter of Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) for marriage in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned her beauty and elegance. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She is my foster niece." Then he said: "Do you not know that all those relationships become unlawful due to suckling which become unlawful due to lineage?"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he did not consider there to be any harm in contracting marriage while in the state of Ihram, and he said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself contracted marriage with Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) at a place called Sarf while in the state of Ihram. And after completing Hajj, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out to return, he reached the same place and spent the night with her.

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked us, "Which is the final recitation: that of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) or that of Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him)?" We replied, "That of Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him)." He said, "No, in fact, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to review the Noble Qur'an with Jibreel (peace be upon him) every year. In the year the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, he reviewed it twice, and the final recitation was that of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to recite «﴿الم o غُلِبَتِ الرُّومُ﴾» in both the well-known and the lesser-known ways, and he used to say that it was always the wish of the polytheists that the Persians would prevail over the Romans, because the Persians were idolaters, while the Muslims wished that the Romans would prevail over the Persians because they were People of the Book. They mentioned this to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Romans will indeed prevail." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned this prophecy before the Quraysh. They said: Set a term between us and you; if, according to our view, the Persians prevail, you will give us such and such, and if, according to your view, the Romans prevail, we will give you such and such. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) set a term of five years, but during that period the Romans did not appear to prevail, so he mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you not set a term within ten years?" Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that in fact, the word «﴿بِضْعِ﴾» that appears in the Qur'an applies to anything less than ten. Thus, within that period, the Romans prevailed, and this is the background of the opening verses of Surah Ar-Rum.

Ibn Abi Mulaika narrates that during the illness of death of Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) sought permission to enter. Her nephews were present with her. I said to her nephew that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) is seeking permission to enter. Her nephew leaned in and asked Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and she said, "Let it be (I do not have the strength)." He said, "Mother! Ibn Abbas is your very righteous son; he wants to greet you and bid you farewell." She granted permission. He came in and said, "Glad tidings to you! Only so much time remains between you and meeting your companions as it takes for the soul to depart from the body. Among all the pure wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), you were the most beloved, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) loved only that which was pure. On the night of Al-Abwa, your necklace broke and fell, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) camped there, but in the morning the Muslims had no water. Allah, through your blessing, revealed the command of tayammum with pure earth, in which Allah granted concession to this Ummah, and verses of the Noble Qur'an were revealed about you, which Jibreel (peace be upon him) brought from above the seven heavens. Now there is no mosque of the Muslims where your excuse is not recited day and night." Hearing this, she said, "O Ibn Abbas! Leave these praises of yours. By Allah! My wish is that I had become a forgotten tale."
