Muhammad bin Ibrahim says that Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman and Sulaiman bin Yasar both narrated to him this hadith of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). Although I was also present with them in that gathering, I was a small child, so I could not remember it. That a man asked Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) about the Witr prayer? And he narrated the complete hadith. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded that the last prayer of the night should be made Witr.

Nafi’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says that whenever Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was asked about Witr, he would say: If I wish to perform Witr before sleeping, and then later intend to pray during the night, I add one rak’ah to the rak’ah I already prayed for Witr, then I continue to pray two rak’ahs at a time. When I have completed my prayer, I combine one rak’ah with two rak’ahs and perform Witr, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded that the last prayer of the night should be Witr.

I asked him,“O Abu Abdur Rahman, why did you make him quiet?”He replied:“As long as the deceased has not been placed in the grave, he is harmed by this.”I asked him again,“Sometimes I pray the morning prayer with you at such a time that after saying salam, I cannot see the face of the man sitting next to me, and sometimes you pray when there is plenty of light?”He replied:“I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praying in this way, and I love to pray in the same way as I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praying.”
