Benefits & Rulings:
➊ This narration from Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) is also found in Musnad Ahmad with slight variation in wording. The researchers of the Musnad have classified it as ḥasan (sound). For more detail, refer to: Al-Mawsū‘ah al-Ḥadīthiyyah (7/208, 436). Shaykh al-Albānī (may Allah have mercy on him) has also included it in Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Mājah. Therefore, despite being considered weak by some scholars, this narration is acceptable as evidence according to others.
➋ The straight path that leads to Allah is only one, while the paths of misguidance are numerous.
➌ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ drew lines on both sides of a straight line to illustrate misguidance. This likely indicated that deviation sometimes appears in the form of exaggeration and excess (ghuluw and ifrāṭ), while at other times in the form of negligence and deficiency (tafrīṭ). Excess leads to the invention of bid‘ah (innovations) and adoption of polytheistic practices and beliefs. Deficiency leads to neglect of obligations and Sunnah, emboldening sin, and ultimately ending in disbelief.
➍ The straight path lies between excess and negligence — whether in belief (e.g., the way of Ahl al-Sunnah between the Mu‘aṭṭilah and the Mushabbihah), or in actions (e.g., spending moderately between extravagance and miserliness).
➎ Using diagrams or visual aids for explaining scholarly concepts is permissible. In our times, using blackboards in classrooms or modern audiovisual tools is not against the Sharī‘ah — unless the content or method used clearly contradicts Islamic teachings.
➏ The Prophet’s ﷺ teachings are based on the explanation of the Qur’an. Sometimes, he would directly reference the relevant Qur'anic verse when explaining a matter, and at other times he would not. However, no authentic ḥadīth ever contradicts the Qur’an. If a ḥadīth seems to conflict with a verse, the scholars of ḥadīth clarify and reconcile them in a way that removes confusion. Such examples can be found from the Prophet ﷺ himself and the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them).
➐ Allah’s path is only one — not four, five, or six. That one path is the one clearly laid out in the Qur’an, and further explained through the Prophet’s ﷺ sayings and actions. Differences among the scholars in secondary matters (furu‘) are based on ijtihād (scholarly reasoning) and should not be the cause for dividing the Ummah into sects. Sadly, some scholars have placed the ijtihād of the Imams above even the clear texts of the Qur’an and Sunnah. This rigid and blind-following mindset has caused division in the Ummah. People now wrongly believe that all sects are on the truth, when in fact, truth can only be one — not multiple at the same time. This ḥadīth also makes it clear that there is only one true path — Allah’s path — and not several.
