Hadith of Abu Tha'labah al-Khushani (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith Number: 17741
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Tha’labah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I participated in the Battle of Khaybar with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The people were hungry, and we came across some domesticated donkeys. We slaughtered them. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) found out, he ordered Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), who then announced among the people that for whoever testifies to my Prophethood, the meat of domesticated donkeys is not lawful. We found garlic and onions in the gardens there. Since the people were hungry, they took them out and began to eat. When they came to the mosque, the smell of garlic and onions had spread in the mosque. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever eats these foul vegetables should not come near us. The animal obtained through looting is not lawful, nor is any animal hunted by a predator with fangs, nor any animal that has been shot as a target.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Tha’labah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I submitted in the court of Prophethood, "O Messenger of Allah! (peace and blessings be upon him), please tell me which things are lawful for me and which things are unlawful?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head and looked at me from bottom to top and said, "Virtue is that which brings peace to the soul and satisfaction to the heart, and sin is that in which neither the soul finds peace nor the heart finds satisfaction, even if the muftis keep giving verdicts." And he said, "Do not go near the meat of domesticated donkeys and any predatory animal that hunts with its fangs."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Tha'labah Khushani (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The most beloved of you to me and the closest to me in the Hereafter will be those with the best character. Then he said, "Do not eat the meat of domesticated donkeys and do not eat the meat of any predatory animal that hunts with its canine teeth." It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Tha’labah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I presented myself in the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) looked at me from bottom to top, then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "There is a little news." I submitted, "O Messenger of Allah! (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) Is it good news or bad news?" He said, "It is good news." Then I submitted, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), we live in a hunting area. I release my trained dog for hunting, sometimes I get the chance to slaughter the animal and sometimes not (before I reach the prey, it has already died). Similarly, when I shoot an arrow, the same happens. What should I do?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Your hand, your bow, and your trained dog—whatever thing comes to you hunted by these, whether you get the chance to slaughter it or not, you may eat it."

When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked again, he did not see the ring on his finger. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Perhaps we have caused you trouble and made you indebted."

We live in the area of the People of the Book. Can we cook food in their pots and drink from their utensils? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you do not find any other utensils, then wash those and you may cook food in them. Then I submitted: O Messenger of Allah! We live in a hunting area, what should we do? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you send your trained dog for hunting and you have pronounced the name of Allah upon it, and it kills the prey, then eat it. And if it is not trained, then slaughter the prey and eat it. Similarly, when you shoot an arrow taking the name of Allah, and the arrow kills the prey, then eat that as well.
