Abu Firas says that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) addressed us in a sermon and said: I do not send the workers (those who collect zakat) so that they may beat you, nor so that they may seize your wealth. Rather, I send them so that they may teach you your religion and your way. If anyone is treated otherwise, let him inform me. By the One in Whose hand is the life of Umar! I will surely take retribution for it. Sayyiduna Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: O Commander of the Believers! If a Muslim man is a ruler over the people and he disciplines someone from his subjects, will you also take retribution from him? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will also take retribution from him. I have seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he took retribution for himself. By the One in Whose hand is the life of Umar! I will surely take retribution for it.

Abu Juham struck him and broke his head. His family came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! We want retribution (qisas). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Take this much wealth (and forgo retribution). They were not satisfied. He said: Take this much wealth, but they were not satisfied. He said: Take even more wealth, and then they agreed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I will address the people and inform them about your agreement. They said: Fine. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave a sermon and said: These people from the tribe of Lays came to me seeking retribution, so I offered them this much wealth and they agreed. Are you satisfied? They said: No! The Muhajireen intended to punish them, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Refrain. So they refrained. He called them again, offered them more, and said: Are you pleased? They said: Yes! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I will address the people and inform them about your agreement. They said: Fine. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave a sermon and asked: Are you pleased? They said: Yes!

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that some people from the tribes of ‘Ukl and ‘Uraynah accepted Islam. They came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him that they were not farmers, but herdsmen, and they also complained about the fever of Madinah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered arrangements to be made for them with some camels and herdsmen, and instructed them to go outside (of Madinah), drink the milk and urine of the camels. They went to a corner of Harrah (a stony plain), and after accepting Islam, they became disbelievers (apostates). They killed the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) herdsman and drove away the camels. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) received this news, he sent people to search for them. They were brought (to him), so he had their eyes branded with heated irons and their hands and feet cut off. Then they were thrown at the edge of Harrah, and they died chewing stones. Qatadah says: We have been informed that the verse: __QUR_5_33__“The recompense of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger...”(al-Ma’idah: 33) was revealed concerning them.
