٣٧٨٥٩ - حدثنا شاذان عن مهدي عن غيلان بن جرير عن مطرف قال] (١): عقول الناس على قدر زمانهم.

(١) سقط ما بين المعكوفين في: [ع].
It is narrated from Hazrat Mutarrif that he said: People's intellects are according to their times.

٣٧٨٦٠ - حدثنا ابن علية عن سعيد عن قتادة عن مطرف بن (الشخير) (١) في قوله: ﴿كانوا قليلا من الليل ما يهجعون﴾ [الذاريات: ١٧]، قال: قل ليلة اتت عليهم هجعوها.

It is narrated from Hazrat Mutarrif ibn al-Shakhir regarding the saying of Allah Almighty { کَانُوا قَلِیلاً مِنَ اللَّیْلِ مَا یَہْجَعُونَ }, he says: Very few nights would come upon them in which they would sleep.

٣٧٨٦١ - حدثنا عفان قال: حدثنا حماد بن سلمة عن ثابت عن مطرف قال: خير الامور (اوساطها) (١).

It is narrated from Hazrat Mutarrif that he said: Among matters, the best are those that are moderate.

٣٧٨٦٢ - حدثنا عفان قال: حدثنا حماد (عن) (١) ثابت عن (مطرف) (٢) انه اقبل (من مبداه) (٣)، (قال) (٤): فجعل يسير بالليل فاضاء له سوطه.

(١) في [س]: (حدثنا).
(٢) سقط من: [جـ].
(٣) سقط من: [س]، والمراد المكان الذي يخرج فيه للبادية، وقد ذكر في تاريخ دمشق ٥٨/ ٣٢٠ أنه ماء يقال له السخيرة على ثلاث ليال من البصرة، وكان له مزرعة هناك، انظر: الزهد لأحمد (٢٤٤).

Hazrat Thabit narrates about Hazrat Mutarrif that he set out from his village. The narrator says that he used to travel at night, and his staff would give him light.

٣٧٨٦٣ - حدثنا عفان قال: حدثنا حماد (١) عن ثابت ان مطرفا قال: لو كانت لي الدنيا فاخذها الله مني بشربة من ماء (يسقيني) (٢) بها يوم القيامة، كان قد اعطاني بها ثمنا.

(٢) في [س]: (سقاني).
It is narrated from Hazrat Thabit that Hazrat Mutarrif said: If I possessed the entire world and then Allah Almighty were to take this world from me in exchange for that sip of water which He will give me to drink on the Day of Judgment, then indeed I would have received the price (worth) of my world.

٣٧٨٦٤ - حدثنا عفان قال: حدثنا حماد بن سلمة عن ثابت قال: كنا عند مطرف فذكرنا الله ودعوناه فقال: (والله) (١) (لئن) (٢) كان هذا مما سبق لكم في الذكر لقد اراد الله بكم خيرا، وإن كان مما يحدث في الليل والنهار لقد اراد الله بكم خيرا، فاي ذلك ما كان فاحمدوا الله عليه.

It is narrated from Hazrat Thabit that he says: We were with Hazrat Mutarrif. So we mentioned Allah and prayed to Allah. Then he said: By God! The time you spent in the remembrance of Allah, indeed Allah intended good for you. And if the coming days and nights are also like this for you, then Allah has intended good for you. Whichever of these happens, you should praise Allah for it.

٣٧٨٦٥ - حدثنا عفان قال: حدثنا حماد عن ثابت ان مطرفا كان يقول: إن (الحديث وإن اليمين) (١) بالله.

(١) كذا في النسخ، ولعل الصواب: (إن الخير واليمن باللَّه).
It is narrated from Hazrat Thabit that he says Hazrat Mutarrif used to say: Surely, the hadith and the oath are with Allah.

٣٧٨٦٦ - حدثنا عفان قال: حدثنا حماد عن ثابت ان مطرفا كان يقول: لو كان الخير في كف احدنا ما استطاع ان يفرغه في قلبه، (حتى يكون الله هو الذي يفرغه في قلبه) (١).

It is narrated from Hazrat Thabit that Hazrat Mutarrif used to say: If goodness were in the palm of one of us, he would not have the ability to put it in his heart until Allah Almighty places it into his heart.

٣٧٨٦٧ - حدثنا عفان قال: حدثنا حماد عن ثابت ان مطرفا كان يقول: لو ان رجلا راى صيدا والصيد لا يراه فختله، الم يوشك ان ياخذه؟ قالوا: بلى، قال: فإن الشيطان يرانا، ونحن لا نراه، وهو يصيب منا.
It is narrated from Hazrat Thabit that Hazrat Mutarrif used to say: If a man sees the prey, and the prey has not seen him, and the hunter lies in wait, is it possible that the hunter will catch the prey? The people said: Why not. Hazrat Mutarrif said: Thus, Satan also sees us but we do not see him, so he catches us.

٣٧٨٦٨ - حدثنا عفان قال: حدثنا (حماد عن) (١) ثابت قال مطرف: نظرت في بدء (هذا) (٢) الامر ممن كان، فإذا هو من الله، ونظرت على من تمامه، (فإذا تمامه) (٣) على الله، ونظرت ما ملاكه، فإذا ملاكه الدعاء.

It is narrated from Hazrat Thabit that Hazrat Mutarrif said: I looked at the beginning of this matter, to see from whom it is? So its beginning is Allah Almighty. And I looked to see upon whom its end will be? So its end is also Allah Almighty. And I pondered over what is the essence (foundation) of this matter? So its essence is supplication (dua).
