Chapter on what is narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him): "The ears are part of the head"

This statement is also narrated with another chain of transmission: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Both ears are part of the head." The narrators have transmitted it in this way on the authority of the narrator named Hammad; however, the narrator named Sulaiman bin Harb has narrated it differently. He is trustworthy and a memorizer (of hadith).

The narrator named Shahr bin Hawshab reported from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him): Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) described the method of ablution (wudu) of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and stated: When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution, he would wipe the corners of his eyes with water. Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) also stated: "Both ears are part of the head." Sulaiman bin Harb stated: "Both ears are part of the head." This is the statement of Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him); whoever says anything else (i.e., considers it a hadith) has altered it. Here, the narrator named Sulaiman said something else, which meant: he made a mistake. Some other narrators have reported something different; they reported from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution, he would wash the corners of both eyes with his fingers. However, they did not mention both ears in this narration.

Ibn Abu Hatim has stated this: My father has stated: The narrator Abu Rabi'ah Sinan bin Rabi'ah becomes confused when transmitting hadith.

Abd Khair narrates: Once, after performing the Fajr prayer, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came and sat in the courtyard. Then he said to his servant, "Bring me water for ablution!" The servant brought water to him in a vessel and also brought a basin. We were watching Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). He took the vessel in his right hand and poured water onto his left hand, then washed both his palms. Then, holding the vessel with his right hand, he poured water onto his left hand and washed both his hands. He did this three times. The narrator named Abd Khair states: Each time he washed his hands, he did not put his hand into the vessel until he had washed both hands three times. Then he put his right hand into the vessel and, taking water with it, rinsed his mouth, put water into his nose, and cleaned his nose with his left hand. He did this three times. Then he washed his right arm up to the elbow three times. Then he put his left hand into the vessel and filled it with water, then raised his hand along with all the water in it, and wiped it with his left hand. Then, with both his hands, he wiped his head once. Then, with his right hand, he poured water on his left foot three times and washed it three times with his left foot. Then he put his right hand into the vessel, took a little water in his palm, and drank it. Then he said: "This is the way of ablution of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Whoever wishes to see the way of ablution of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), this is his way." Some narrators have reported some words with addition or omission, but their meaning is nearly the same.
