Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The amount of your expenditure that will be given is half a sa’ of wheat or one sa’ of dates.

Abu Qilabah says: The person who paid to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) has informed me of this; he paid half a sa’ of wheat.

Abu Qilabah narrates: A person informed me that he had given one sa’ of wheat on behalf of two men to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him (i.e., half a sa’ was obligatory upon each person).

Hasan al-Basri narrates: When Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was the governor of Basra, he said at the end of Ramadan: Pay the zakat of your fasts (Sadaqat al-Fitr). The narrator states: People began to look at each other, so Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Who among you are from the people of Madinah? Let them stand up! And inform their companions about this, because these people do not know that this is the payment which the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made obligatory upon every male and female, free and slave, which is one sa’ of barley or one sa’ of dates, or half a sa’ of wheat.

Hasan al-Basri narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) addressed the people at the end of Ramadan and said: "O people of Basra! Pay the zakat of your fasts (that is, give sadaqat al-fitr)." The narrator states: The people began to look at each other, so Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "All those who are from Madinah Munawwarah, stand up and teach this to your companions, because these people do not know that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made it obligatory in sadaqat al-fitr to give half a sa‘ of wheat or one sa‘ of barley or one sa‘ of dates for every free person and slave, male and female." Hasan al-Basri narrates: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "When Allah grants you prosperity, then give one sa‘ of wheat."

Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that the Zakat al-Fitr should be given before the people go out to perform the Eid prayer. (The narrator states) Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) himself used to give the Zakat al-Fitr one or two days before Eid.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made the payment of Sadaqat al-Fitr obligatory. He (peace be upon him) said: "On this day, make them (the poor people) free of want." The narrator named Yusuf has reported the word "Sadaqah" instead of "Zakat."

Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded that a person should give the Sadaqat al-Fitr before going for the prayer.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed regarding this that it should be given before the people go out for the Eid prayer.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: It is Sunnah that a person should not go to perform the Eid prayer until he has eaten something and given the Sadaqat al-Fitr.
