Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Eid al-Fitr, we used to give Sadaqat al-Fitr, which was one sa’ of grain, or one sa’ of dates, or one sa’ of barley, or one sa’ of raisins, or one sa’ of dried curd. We continued to give it in this manner until Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us from Syria for Hajj or Umrah. At that time, he was the Caliph. He delivered a sermon to the people on the pulpit of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and while mentioning Sadaqat al-Fitr, he said: "I think that two mudd of wheat from Syria are equal to one sa’ of dates." Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) states: At that time, people first began to mention two mudd.

The same narration is also transmitted with another chain, however, in it are the words: "One sa’ of barley."

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: During the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), we used to give one sa' of flour, or one sa' of dates, or one sa' of wheat, or one sa' of raisins, or one sa' of barley, or one sa' of cheese.

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reports: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them regarding Zakat al-Fitr: "It will be one sa' of raisins, or one sa' of dates, or one sa' of cheese, or one sa' of flour."

Malik bin Aws narrates from his father: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Give one sa’ of grain as zakat al-fitr." The narrator states: In those days, our grain consisted of wheat, dates, raisins, and cheese.

This narration is also transmitted with another chain of transmission.

Abdullah bin Thalabah narrates from his father: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Give Sadaqat al-Fitr as one sa’ of dates or one sa’ of barley or half a sa’ of wheat on behalf of every young and old, male and female, free and slave."

Abdullah bin Thalabah narrates from his father: The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Give one sa’ of wheat as (Sadaqat al-Fitr) on behalf of every person, young and old, male and female, wealthy and poor. As for the wealthy person, Allah Almighty will purify his (i.e., his wealth), and as for the poor person, Allah Almighty will give him more than what he has given."

Tha‘labah bin Abu Sa‘ir narrates from his father that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:“Give one sa‘ of wheat (the narrator is unsure about one word here) on behalf of every small and great, male and female, free and slave, wealthy and poor. As for the wealthy, Allah will purify them (i.e., their wealth), and as for the poor, Allah will give them more than what they have given.”

The same narration is also transmitted with another chain, however, in it are these words: "As for the poor person, Allah Almighty will make him prosperous."
