Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once, while delivering a sermon, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed us:“Whoever possesses this should give half a sa’ of wheat, or one sa’ of dates, or one sa’ of barley, or one sa’ of flour, or one sa’ of raisins, or one sa’ of wheat (as Sadaqat al-Fitr).”These words have been narrated by a transmitter named Salman bin Arqam, and this person is considered unreliable in hadith.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sadaqat al-Fitr is to be given on behalf of every small and big, male and female, Jew and Christian (slave), free and slave, which will be half a sa’ of wheat or one sa’ of dates or one sa’ of barley." The narrator of this narration, Salam, is severely abandoned in hadith.

Bishr bin Umar narrates: I requested Imam Malik to grant me the *Mudd* (a specific measure) of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Imam Malik had it brought, a servant brought it and gave it to him. I showed it to Imam Malik and asked: Is this the one? He replied: Yes! This is the *Mudd* of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Then he said: This is not the very specific measure that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) himself used, but rather it is a measure according to its measurement. (The narrator says) I asked: Do you people pay your zakat, charity, expiations, etc., according to this? He replied: Yes! We make payments according to this. I said: If a person wants to give Sadaqat al-Fitr or expiation for an oath according to the *Mudd* (which is larger than this), will it be valid? He said: No! He should pay according to this *Mudd*, and after that, he may give as much more as he wishes.

Ishaq bin Salman narrates: I asked Imam Malik, "O Abu Abdullah! What was the weight of the specific sa’ of the Prophet (peace be upon him)?" He replied, "According to the Iraqi ratl, it is five ratl and one third of a ratl. I have measured it." I said, "O Abu Abdullah! You have given a fatwa against the elder of your time." He asked, "Who is that?" I said, "Imam Abu Hanifa! Because he says it is eight ratl." Imam Malik became angry and said, "May Allah ruin them! How daring they have been regarding Allah, the Exalted." Then he said to one of those sitting there, "O so-and-so! Bring the sa’ of your forefather. O so-and-so! Bring the sa’ of your uncle. O so-and-so! Bring the sa’ of your grandmother." The narrator named Ishaq says: Various sa’s were gathered there. Imam Malik said, "According to what do you people preserve it (i.e., to what is it attributed)?" That person said, "My father narrated from his father that he gave (charity) to the Prophet (peace be upon him) according to this sa’." The second person said, "My father narrated from his brother that he gave (charity) to the Prophet (peace be upon him) according to this sa’." The third said, "My father told me, and he narrated from his mother that she gave (charity) to the Prophet (peace be upon him) according to this sa’." Imam Malik said: "When I measured it, it was five ratl and one third of a ratl." The narrator says: I said, "O Abu Abdullah! I will tell you something even more astonishing about them (i.e., Imam Abu Hanifa). They say that in Sadaqat al-Fitr, half a sa’ should be given, and one sa’ is eight ratl." Imam Malik said, "This is even more astonishing. They have erred in the measurement and reduced the amount to be given. No! A complete sa’ should be given on behalf of every person. We have heard the scholars of our city (Madina Munawwara) say this."
