Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: "When a free woman is the wife of a slave, the woman can be given two divorces, and her waiting period (‘iddah) will be three menstrual cycles. And when a slave woman is the wife of a free man, she can be given two divorces and her waiting period, according to her status as a slave woman (i.e., two menstrual cycles), will be observed."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: "When a slave gives his wife two divorces, the woman becomes unlawful for him until she marries another man and becomes widowed or divorced, whether the woman is free or a slave-girl. However, the waiting period (‘iddah) for a free woman is three menstrual cycles, while for a slave-girl it is two menstrual cycles."

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), regarding a slave woman who is the wife of a free man, says: "She will become separated (bainah) through two divorces, and will observe the waiting period ('iddah) for two menstrual cycles. And when a free woman is the wife of a slave, she will become separated through two divorces and will observe the waiting period for three menstrual cycles." This narration has also been transmitted by other narrators as a mawquf (companion's statement) narration, and this is correct. With another chain, this narration has been transmitted as a marfu' (Prophet's statement) hadith, but this narration is munkar (rejected) and is not established from two aspects: one is that the narrator named 'Atiyyah is weak, while Salim and Nafi' are more reliable and transmit more authentic narrations; the second aspect is that 'Amr bin Shayb is weak in hadith, and his narration cannot be used as evidence. And Allah knows best.

Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I submitted to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): (The command of Allah, the Exalted, is:) "And the waiting period of pregnant women (ends) when they deliver their burden." Is this ruling for a woman who has been divorced three times, or for a widow? The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is for both the divorced woman and the widow."

Zaid bin Aslam narrates: Qasim was asked about the waiting period (‘iddah) of a slave woman, so he replied:“People say it is two menstrual cycles, but we do not have knowledge about this (the narrator is in doubt or perhaps these are the words), we do not find this ruling in the Book of Allah or the Sunnah of His Messenger.”Ibn Wahb has transmitted the same statement from Qasim and Salim with his chain:“This ruling is not in the Book of Allah or the Sunnah of His Messenger, however, the Muslims act upon it.”

Ikrimah narrates the statement of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): The use of the word "haram" (for the wife) is not (a divorce) but an oath, for which expiation must be given. Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says regarding the use of the word "haram": This is an oath for which expiation must be given. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: For you, there is the best example in the life of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) declared his slave-girl haram upon himself, and Allah said: "Why do you declare haram what Allah has made halal for you?" The verse continues until: "Indeed, Allah has ordained for you..." So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave expiation for his oath, and he considered the use of the word "haram" to be an oath.
