Mukhaddaji, who belonged to Banu Kinana, says that there was an Ansari man in Syria whose kunya was Abu Muhammad. He used to say that Witr is obligatory (fard). Mukhaddaji went to Hazrat Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "Abu Muhammad considers Witr to be obligatory." Hazrat Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Abu Muhammad is mistaken. I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Allah has made five prayers obligatory upon His servants. Whoever performs them without neglecting anything from them and does not consider anything from their rights insignificant, then Allah has promised to admit him to Paradise. And whoever does not perform them in this way, then Allah has no promise with him; if He wills, He will punish him, and if He wills, He will forgive him."

Hazrat Abu Umamah Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I asked Hazrat Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) about Surah Anfal, so he replied that this Surah was revealed concerning us, the companions of Badr, when there was a difference of opinion among us regarding the distribution of the spoils of war, and our attitude in this regard was not appropriate. Therefore, Allah took it away from among us and gave the authority of its distribution to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed it equally among the Muslims.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a pledge from us on six things just as he took from women: that you will not associate anything with Allah, you will not steal, you will not commit adultery, you will not kill your children, you will not slander one another, and you will not disobey me in any good matter. Whoever among you commits a punishable offense with a woman and receives its immediate punishment, then that will be his atonement. But if he is given respite, then his matter is with Allah; if He wills, He will punish him, and if He wills, He will forgive him.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to visit Hazrat Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was ill. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had not yet left his bedside when he said: "Do you know who are the martyrs of my Ummah?" The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) replied: "The martyr is the Muslim who is killed in the battlefield." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If it were so, then the martyrs of my Ummah would be very few. The one who is killed (unjustly) is also a martyr, the one who dies in a plague is also a martyr, and the woman who dies because of her child (i.e., the woman who dies during childbirth due to the pain of delivery) is also a martyr."

It is narrated from Hazrat Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I went to visit the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) when he was ill, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in such pain that only Allah knows its severity. Seeing this, I said, "When I visited in the morning, you were in such pain that only Allah knows its severity, and now when I have come, you are completely fine." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "O Ibn Samit! Jibreel (peace be upon him) performed a ruqyah (incantation) on me with a mantra by which I was cured. Should I not teach it to you as well?" I said, "Why not?" He said, "These are the words: In the name of Allah, I perform ruqyah for you from every thing that may harm you, from the evil of every envious one and from every evil eye. In the name of Allah, may Allah grant you healing."
