Hazrat Muslim bin Abi Bakrah narrates from his respected father that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to recite this supplication after prayer, «‏‏‏‏اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْکُفْرِ وَالْفَقْرِ وَ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ» ‏‏‏‏ "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from disbelief, poverty and destitution, and the torment of the grave."

Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he said: O Messenger of Allah, the wealthy and affluent people have taken (a lot of) reward and merit. They recite (the Qur’an and other adhkar) as we do, and they also spend (in the way of Allah), but we (the poor) do not spend. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Shall I not tell you of an action, that when you do it, you will catch up with those who came before you (in reward and merit), and surpass those who come after you, except for the one who does the same as you? After every prayer, recite «‏‏‏‏سُبْحَانَ اللَٰه» ‏‏‏‏ thirty-three times, «‏‏‏‏الحَمْدُ لِلَٰه» ‏‏‏‏ thirty-three times, and «‏‏‏‏اللهُ أَكْبَرُ» ‏‏‏‏ the same number of times. And when you go to your bed (to sleep), recite them in the same way.”

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the poor companions came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said,“O Messenger of Allah, the wealthy have attained high ranks and everlasting blessings due to their wealth. They pray as we pray, they fast as we fast, and they have extra wealth with which they perform Hajj, ‘Umrah, strive in jihad, and give charity.”So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Shall I not tell you of an action which, if you act upon it, you will catch up with those who have surpassed you, and those who come after you will not be able to catch up with you? (You will always remain ahead of them in reward and virtue.) After every prayer, recite «‏‏‏‏سُبْحَانَ اللَٰه» ‏‏‏‏ thirty-three times, «‏‏‏‏الحَمْدُ لِلَٰه» ‏‏‏‏ thirty-three times, and «‏‏‏‏اللهُ أَكْبَرُ» ‏‏‏‏ thirty-three times.”He says that then there was a difference among us; some of us said that we would recite «‏‏‏‏سُبْحَانَ اللَٰه، الحَمْدُ لِلَٰه» ‏‏‏‏ thirty-three times and «‏‏‏‏اللهُ أَكْبَرُ» ‏‏‏‏ thirty-four times. Therefore, I went again to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said:“Continue reciting «‏‏‏‏سُبْحَانَ اللَٰه، الحَمْدُ لِلَٰه، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ» ‏‏‏‏ until you have completed all of them thirty-three times each.”

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrates from the Noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم that he صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "Whoever recites «‏‏‏‏سُبْحَانَ اللَٰه» ‏‏‏‏ thirty-three times, «‏‏‏‏الحَمْدُ لِلَٰه» ‏‏‏‏ thirty-three times, and «‏‏‏‏اللهُ أَكْبَرُ» ‏‏‏‏ thirty-three times after the prayer, this makes ninety-nine times. Then, to complete the count to one hundred, he recites «‏‏‏‏لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَٰهُ وَحْدَهُ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ، وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ» ‏‏‏‏ 'There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, He is alone, He has no partner, all sovereignty and all praise belong to Him, and He has power over all things.' — his sins will be forgiven even if they are as much as the foam of the sea."

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that one day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took my hand and said, "O Mu'adh, by Allah, indeed I love you." So I said, "May my parents be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, indeed I also love you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "O Mu'adh, I advise you that you never leave supplicating this after every prayer" «‏‏‏‏اللّٰهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ، وَشُكْرِكَ، وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ» ‏‏‏‏ "O Allah, help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You in the best manner." Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) advised this to his student Sanabihi, and Sanabihi advised it to his student Abu Abdur Rahman Hubli, and Abu Abdur Rahman advised it to Uqbah bin Muslim.

Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we were commanded to recite «‏‏‏‏سُبْحَانَ اللَٰه» ‏‏‏‏ thirty-three times, «‏‏‏‏الحَمْدُ لِلَٰه» ‏‏‏‏ thirty-three times, and «‏‏‏‏اللهُ أَكْبَرُ» ‏‏‏‏ thirty-four times after every prayer. Then an Ansari man saw a dream in which it was said to him, "Has the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded you to recite tasbih this many times after every prayer?" He replied, "Yes." (The person who came in the dream) said, "You should recite it twenty-five times each and include tahlil «‏‏‏‏لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا الله» ‏‏‏‏ in it." When morning came, that man went to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of the entire matter. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Do it that way."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that Sayyidah Juwayriyyah bint Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) stated, her name was Barrah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) changed her name to Juwayriyyah, and he (peace be upon him) liked that it be said: "You have come out from the house of Barrah (piety)." She says that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) went out while I was sitting in my prayer place (engaged in remembrance). Then he (peace be upon him) returned when the day had advanced, while I was still sitting on my prayer mat (engaged in remembrance). He (peace be upon him) asked: "Since I left, have you been sitting continuously in your prayer place?" I replied, "Yes." He (peace be upon him) said: "After I left you, I have recited only four phrases three times. If they were weighed against all that you have recited, they would outweigh them. (Those words are): «‏‏‏‏سُبْحـانَ اللهِ وَبِحَمْـدِهِ عَدَدَ خَلْـقِه، وَرِضـا نَفْسِـه، وَزِنَـةَ عَـرْشِـه، وَمِـدادَ كَلِمـاتِـه» ‏‏‏‏ 'I declare the glory of Allah and His praise as many times as the number of His creation, as much as pleases His Self, as heavy as His Throne, and as much as the ink of His words.'" This is the narration of Yahya bin Hakim. In the narration of Abdul Jabbar, it is mentioned that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that when he (peace be upon him) went for the morning prayer, Sayyidah Juwayriyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) was sitting in the mosque. Then the rest of the hadith is mentioned, but the previous statement is not mentioned.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by him while he was moving his lips (i.e., reciting something). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Abu Umamah, what are you reciting?" He replied, "I am remembering my Lord." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you of a remembrance that is greater or more excellent and superior than your remembrance during the night along with its day and during the day along with its night? Recite these words." «‏‏‏‏سُبحَان اللهِ عدَدَ مَا خَلَق، سبُحَان اللهِ مِلْءَ مَا خَلَقَ، سبُحَان اللهِ عدَدَ مَا في الأرضِ وَالسَماءِ سُبحَان اللهِ مِلْءَ مَا في الأرضِ وَالسَماءِ، وَسُبحَان اللهِ عدَدَ مَا أحْصٰى كِتابُهُ سُبْحانَ اللهِ مِلْءَ كلِّ شيءٍ» ‏‏‏‏ "I declare the purity and greatness of Allah as many times as the number of His creation. I declare the purity of Allah as much as the fullness of His creation. I declare the greatness and majesty of Allah as many times as the number of creatures in the earth and the heavens. I declare the purity of Allah as much as the fullness of everything in the earth and the heavens. I declare the purity of Allah as many times as the number that Allah's Book has counted. I declare the purity of Allah as many times as the number of everything and as much as the fullness of everything. And you should also praise and glorify Allah in the same way."

Sayyiduna Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Recite the Mu'awwidhat «‏‏‏‏قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ، قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ، قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ» ‏‏‏‏ [ سورة الإخلاص، سورة الفلق، سورة الناس ] after every prayer." Janab Hasan bin Muhammad did not narrate the words «‏‏‏‏لي» ‏‏‏‏ (he said to me).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When any one of you offers prayer and then remains seated in the same place where he prayed, the angels continuously supplicate for mercy for him. «‏‏‏‏اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ اللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْهُ» ‏‏‏‏ 'O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, have mercy on him.' (The angels keep making these supplications continuously) as long as he does not lose his ablution." This is the narration of Ibn Fudayl. And in the narration of Ibn Wahb, these words are mentioned: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a Muslim person, after offering prayer, sits in his prayer place, the angels continue to supplicate for him until he breaks his ablution or stands up." (O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, have mercy on him.)
