Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever has eaten this plant, garlic..." Hadith Number: 1666
It is narrated from Ma’dan that Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) addressed the people on Friday and said:“O people, indeed you eat from these two plants, and to me both of them are foul-smelling—one is garlic and the other is onion. And I used to see a man from whose mouth (their) odor was perceived, so his hand would be taken and he would be led out towards Baqi’. (Therefore) whoever wishes to eat them should cook them well and remove their smell.”

159| Chapter on the evidence that the prohibition is due to people being harmed by the smell, not because eating is forbidden
Hadith Number: 1667
Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we had not gone much further when Khaybar was conquered, and we reached a field of garlic. He says that the people were extremely hungry, so we ate garlic to our fill. Then we came to the mosque. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sensed the smell and said:“Whoever has eaten from this foul-smelling plant should not come near our mosque.”Upon this, people began to say that garlic had become forbidden, garlic had become forbidden. When this reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said:“O people, I have no right to declare as forbidden what Allah has made lawful. But this is a plant whose smell I do not like.”This is the narration of Abu Hashim. And Abu Musa, in his narration, has added these words:“And the situation is that one who whispers from among my angels comes to me, so I dislike that they should sense its odor from me.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade eating onions and wild garlic. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that a vegetable stew was sent to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in which there was onion or leek. When Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) did not see any sign of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) eating from it, he also refused to eat it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "What prevented you from eating this food?" He replied, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I did not see any sign of you eating it." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(I did not eat it because) I feel shy before the angels of Allah (lest they perceive its odor), and it is not forbidden."

Lady Umm Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) stayed as a guest in our house, so we prepared a special meal for him in which there were some vegetables as well. When that food was presented to the Prophet (peace be upon him), he said to his companions: "You eat, for I am not like you. Indeed, I fear that I might cause discomfort to my companion (Jibreel)." Abu Qudamah narrates that I stayed as a guest with Lady Umm Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with her), so she narrated to me, she said that you (the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him) became our guest.

Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I ate garlic, then I came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and I found him in the state that he had already performed one rak‘ah. Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) completed the prayer, I stood up and began to complete my prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sensed the smell of garlic and said:“Whoever has eaten this vegetable should not come near our mosque until its smell is gone.”When I completed my prayer, I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said,“O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), I have an excuse (for eating garlic). Please give me your blessed hand, you will find this matter easy.”So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave me his blessed hand. I put the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) inside my sleeve and placed it on my chest, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) realized that (my stomach was tied due to hunger). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:“Indeed, (in this state of necessity, for you) there is an excuse for eating garlic.”

Sayyiduna Mahmood bin Rabee’ Ansari رضي الله عنه narrates that Sayyiduna ‘Itbaan bin Malik رضي الله عنه told me that the next day, after the sun had risen high, the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه came to my house. The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم sought permission (to enter), so I granted him permission (and welcomed him). He صلى الله عليه وسلم entered the house without sitting and asked:“In which part of your house would you like me to lead the prayer?”He says: I pointed to a corner of the house. So the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم stood up and said the takbeer, and we formed rows behind him, and he led us in two rak’ahs, then made the salaam.
