The freed slave of Banu Hashim, Ibn Abi Ammar, narrates that I passed by Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Samrah (may Allah be pleased with him) on the day of Jumu’ah while he was at the canal of Umm Abdullah and was letting water flow for his children and slaves. So I said to him,“O Abu Sa’id, (will you not be present for) Jumu’ah?”He replied,“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘When there is heavy rain, perform the prayer in your homes.’”

Abu Mulaikh narrates from his father Muhammad that he was present with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) during the time of the Battle of Hudaybiyyah, and on Friday it rained upon them, but even the soles of their shoes did not get wet. So the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered them to pray in their tents. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that, except for Sufyan bin Habib, no narrator has mentioned the words "on Friday."

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Harith that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) ordered the mu’adhdhin to give the adhan on the day of Jumu’ah with these words, and on that day it was raining. So he said «‏‏‏‏اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰه» ‏‏‏‏. Then he told him to announce to the people that they should pray in their homes. So the people said to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both),“What is this that you have done?”He replied,“This was done by the one who is better and superior to me. Are you advising me to make people come out in such a state that they would walk through mud up to their knees?”This is the hadith of Ahmad bin Abadah. And Yusuf said that a man from the people of Basrah, Abdullah bin Harith, who is a relative by marriage of Imam Ibn Sirin, narrated that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said,“Should I make people come out of their homes and make them responsible for bringing mud from their paths into the mosque?”

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Harith that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to his muezzin on a rainy day: When you have said «‏‏‏‏وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰه» ‏‏‏‏, do not say «‏‏‏‏حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ» ‏‏‏‏, but instead say the words «‏‏‏‏صَلُّوْ فِيْ بُيُوْتِكُمْ» ‏‏‏‏ "Pray in your homes." So it seemed that the people disliked this, so he said: Are you surprised at this, even though this action was also done by the one who is greater and better than me? Indeed, Jumu'ah is obligatory, and surely I disliked that I should make you come out (from your homes) and that you should walk in mud and clay (to the mosque).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said on a rainy Friday: «‏‏‏‏أَنْ صَلُّوا فِيْ رِحَالِكُمْ» ‏‏‏‏ "Perform the prayer in your homes and tents."

Umar bin Ata reports that Nafi’ bin Jubair sent me to Sā’ib bin Yazid to ask him a question. So I asked him the question, and he replied: Yes, I performed the Friday prayer with Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) in the mihrab. Then, when I finished the prayer with salam, I stood up and began (nafl) prayer. So he sent a man to call me. I went to him, and he said to me: When you have performed the Friday prayer, do not join any other prayer with the Friday prayer before leaving from there or before speaking, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded this.

Hazrat Umar bin Ata bin Abu al-Khawar narrates that Nafi’ bin Jubair sent me to Hazrat Sa’ib bin Yazid to ask him about the matter which Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) had seen from him. He replied that I performed the Friday prayer with Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) in the mihrab. Then I stood at my place to offer voluntary (nafl) prayer. So he said to me,“Do not join a voluntary prayer with the Friday prayer until you move from that place or speak to someone, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has commanded this.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would finish offering the Friday prayer, he would go to his house and perform two rak‘ahs.
