Encouragement for Charity
Hadith Number: 577
Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that I was walking with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at night on the black stony ground of Madinah when the Uhud mountain appeared. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "O Abu Dharr, I do not like that if I had gold equal to the mountain of Uhud, and a night or even three nights passed over me while even a single dinar from it remained with me, except that which I keep for the repayment of a debt. I would distribute all that gold among Allah’s creation in this way." Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) demonstrated this by filling his hands and spreading them out. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "O Abu Dharr." I replied, "At your service and for your happiness, O Messenger of Allah!" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Those who accumulate much (wealth) will be the ones with little (reward), except the one who spends it like this and like this on the servants of Allah, meaning abundantly." Then he said, "Stay here, Abu Dharr. Do not move from here until I return." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) left and disappeared from sight. After that, I heard a sound and I feared that perhaps something had happened to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so I wanted to go (to see the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him), but immediately I remembered the instruction of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) not to move from here, so I stayed there. (When he returned,) I said, "I heard a sound and I became afraid that something might have happened to you, then I remembered your instruction, so I stayed here." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "That was Jibreel (peace be upon him); he came to me and informed me that whoever from my Ummah dies without associating anything with Allah will enter Paradise." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, even if he committed adultery and theft?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Yes, even if he committed adultery and theft."

Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that one night I went out and saw that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was walking alone and there was no one with him. Sayyiduna Abu Dharr says that from this I understood that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would not like anyone to be with him at that time, so I began to walk behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the shadow of the moon. After that, he turned and saw me and asked, "Who is it?" I replied, "Abu Dharr! May Allah sacrifice me for you." He said, "Abu Dharr, come here." He narrated that then I walked with him for a while. After that, he said, "Those who have amassed much wealth (in this world) will be the ones in loss on the Day of Resurrection, except those to whom Allah has given wealth and they spent it to the right, to the left, in front, and behind, and used it in good deeds." (Sayyiduna Abu Dharr) narrated that then I walked with him for a while. He said, "Sit down here." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made me sit on a flat ground surrounded by stones and said, "Remain seated here until I return to you." Then he went towards the rocky ground and disappeared from sight. He stayed there for a long time. Then I heard him coming, saying, "Even if he has stolen, even if he has committed adultery." Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came, I could not remain patient and I asked, "O Messenger of Allah, may Allah sacrifice me for you, at the edge of that rocky ground, whom were you talking to? I did not see anyone else talking to you." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "That was Jibreel (peace be upon him). He met me at the edge of the rocky ground (Harrah) and said, 'Give glad tidings to your Ummah that whoever dies without associating anything with Allah will enter Paradise.' I asked, 'O Jibreel, even if he has stolen and committed adultery?' He said, 'Yes.' I asked again, 'Even if he has stolen and committed adultery?' Jibreel said, 'Yes, even if he has drunk wine.'"

Sayyiduna Ahnaf bin Qais (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that I was sitting in a gathering of the Quraysh when suddenly a man came in a rough, coarse garment and in a shabby condition. He stood up, greeted with salam, and said: "Glad tidings to the hoarders of wealth of that stone which will be heated in the fire of Hell and placed on their nipples until it pierces through to the shoulder, and when placed on the thin bone of the shoulder, it will pierce through to the chest. In this way, the stone will keep rolling." After saying this, that person left and sat down leaning against a pillar. I also went with him and sat near him. Until then, I did not know who this person was. I said to him, "I think the people did not like your words." He replied, "They are all foolish. My beloved friend told me..." (I asked, "Who is your beloved friend?" He replied, "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.") "O Abu Dharr, do you see Mount Uhud?" Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: At that time, I looked up towards the sun to see how much of the day was left, because I thought from your words that you might send me for some task. I replied, "Yes, I have seen Mount Uhud." He said, "If I had gold equal to Mount Uhud, I would not like to keep more than three dinars of it, and I would give all the rest (in the way of Allah)." (Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him, further said:) "These people know nothing; they are only concerned with accumulating the world. Never! By Allah, I will neither ask them for their worldly possessions nor inquire from them about any religious matter until I meet Allah, the Exalted."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah the Exalted says, "(O My servants,) spend (in My way), and I will spend on you." And he said: "The hand of Allah is full; continuous spending night and day does not diminish it." And he said: "Have you not seen that since Allah created the heavens and the earth, He has been spending continuously, yet nothing has diminished from His hand? His Throne was upon water, and in His hand is the scale of justice, which He lowers and raises."

By "mudabbir" is meant a slave whose freedom is made conditional upon the master's death. Since he had no property other than the slave, he sold him, and then it was seen that he had spent all his wealth and was falling into destruction because of it, so his statement was declared invalid and it was annulled. Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) was the wealthiest among the Ansar in Madinah because of his date orchards, and among his gardens, he loved the garden of Bairuha the most. This garden was situated directly opposite the Prophet’s Mosque, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to visit it and drink its sweet water. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when this verse was revealed:“You will never attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love”(Aal-e-Imran 92), Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said,“O Messenger of Allah! Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, says: ‘You will never attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love,’ and the garden of Bairuha is the dearest of my property to me. Therefore, I give it in charity for the sake of Allah, hoping for its goodness and for it to be stored as a treasure for me in the Hereafter. So, O Messenger of Allah, use it wherever Allah commands you to use it.”The narrator said that upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Excellent! This is a profitable property. This is indeed a very beneficial asset. I have heard what you have said, and I think it best that you distribute it among your close relatives.”Abu Talha said,“O Messenger of Allah! I will do so.”So he distributed it among his relatives and the sons of his uncle.

Lady Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud, narrated that I was in the Prophet’s Mosque when I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying:“Give charity, even if it is from your jewelry.”Lady Zainab used to spend her charity on her husband, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and on some orphans who were under her care. Therefore, she said to her husband:“Ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) whether the charity I spend on you and on those orphans under my care will suffice for me (as charity)?”But Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said:“You go yourself and ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).”So, in the end, I myself went to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
