بَابٌ تَطْهِيرُ إِهَابِ الْمَيْتَةِ بِالدِّبَاغِ
Chapter on Purifying the Skin of a Dead Animal by Tanning
Hadith Number: 423
عن ابن عباس رضي الله عنه ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم مر بشاة ميتة فقال: ((هلا استمتعتم بإهابها)) فقالوا: يا رسول الله! إنها ميتة، فقال: ((إنما حرم اكلها))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a dead goat. He (peace be upon him) said: "Why did you not benefit from its skin?" They said: "O Messenger of Allah! Indeed, it is dead." He (peace be upon him) said: "Only its eating is forbidden."

Hadith Number: 424
عن ميمونة زوج النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم قالت: مر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم برجال من قريش يجرون شاة لهم مثل الحمار، فقال لهم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم: ((لو اخذتم إهابها)) قالوا: إنها ميتة، قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم: ((يطهرها الماء والقرظ))
The wife of the Messenger, Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by some men of the Quraysh who were dragging a goat like a donkey. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "If only you had taken off its skin." They said: "It is dead (carrion)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Water and qaraz will purify it."

فَصْلٌ فِي تَحْرِيمِ أَكْلِ جُلُودِ الْمَيْتَةِ وَإِنْ طَهُرَتْ بِالدِّبَاغِ
Section on the Prohibition of Eating the Skins of Dead Animals Even if Purified by Tanning
Hadith Number: 425
عن ابن عباس رضي الله عنه قال: ماتت شاة لسودة بنت زمعة فقالت: يا رسول الله! ماتت فلانة تعني شاة، فقال: ((فلو لا اخذتم مسكها)) فقالت: ناخذ مسك شاة قد ماتت؟ فقال لها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم: ((إنما قال الله عز وجل: {قل لا اجد في ما اوحي إلي محرما على طاعم يطعمه إلا ان يكون ميتة او دما مسفوحا او لحم خنزير} فإنكم لا تطعمونه، إن تدبغوه فتنتفعوا به))، فارسلت إليها فسلخت مسكها فدبغته فاخذت منه قربة حتى تخرقت عندها
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), he says: Sayyida Sawda bint Zam‘a (may Allah be pleased with her) had a goat that died. She said:“O Messenger of Allah! Such-and-such goat has died.”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Why did you not remove its skin?”She said:“How can we remove the skin of a dead goat?”The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Allah the Exalted has said: «قُلْ لَآ اَجِدُ فِیْ مَآ اُوْحِیَ اِلَیَّ مُحَرَّمًا عَلٰی طَاعِمٍ یَّطْعَمُہٗٓ اِلَّآ اَنْ یَّکُوْنَ مَیْتَۃً اَوْ دَمًا مَّسْفُوْحًا اَوْ لَحْمَ خِنْزِیْرٍ» (Say: I do not find, in what has been revealed to me, anything forbidden to an eater who wishes to eat it, except it be carrion, or blood poured forth, or the flesh of swine...) (Al-An‘am: 145). So indeed, you are not going to eat its skin, but if you tan it, you can benefit from it.”So she sent a servant (to bring the goat), and they removed its skin, tanned it, and made a water bag from it, (and she continued to use it) until it finally tore while it was still with her.

Section on the Evidence for Those Who Say the Hair of a Dead Animal is Pure if the Skin is Tanned
Hadith Number: 426
عن ثابت قال: كنت جالسا مع عبد الرحمن بن ابي ليلى في المسجد فاتى رجل ضخم فقال: يا ابا عيسى! قال: نعم، قال: حدثنا ما سمعت في الفراء؟ فقال: سمعت ابي يقول: كنت جالسا عند رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم فاتى رجل فقال: يا رسول الله! اصلي في الفراء؟ قال: فاين الدباغ؟ فلما ولى قلت: من هذا؟ قال: هذا سويد بن غفلة
Thabit bin Aslam Banani (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I was sitting in the mosque with Abdur Rahman bin Abu Laila (may Allah have mercy on him), when a stout man came and said: "O Abu Isa (Abdur Rahman)!" He replied: "Yes." He said: "Relate what you have heard regarding the fara’." So he said: "I heard from my father, who said: I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man came and said: O Messenger of Allah! Can I pray in the fara’?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then what is the benefit of dyeing it?" When he left, I (Thabit) said: "Who was that man?" Abdur Rahman said: "That was Suwaid bin Ghaflah (may Allah be pleased with him)."

بَابٌ فِي عَدْمِ جَوَازِ الْانْتِفَاعِ مِنَ الْمَيْتَةِ بِإِهَابٍ وَلَا عَصَبٍ وَالْجَمْعِ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ أَحَادِيثِ الْجَوَازِ
Chapter on the Prohibition of Benefiting from a Dead Animal’s Skin or Nerves and Reconciling This with the Hadiths Permitting It
Hadith Number: 427
عن عبد الله بن عكيم الجهني قال: اتانا كتاب النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم بارض جهينة وانا غلام شاب ((ان لا تنتفعوا من الميتة بإهاب ولا عصب))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ukeem Juhani, may Allah be pleased with him, who says: A letter from the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, came to us in the land of Juhainah, while I was a young boy at that time. (It was written in that letter:) "Do not benefit from the skin and tendons of carrion."

Hadith Number: 428
(وعنه من طريق ثان) قال: كتب إلينا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم قبل وفاته بشهر ((ان لا تنتفعوا من الميتة بإهاب ولا عصب))
(Second chain) Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ukeem Juhani رضي الله عنه narrates: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم, one month before his passing, wrote to us this command: "Do not benefit from the skin and tendons of carrion (dead animals)."

Hadith Number: 429
(وعنه من طريق ثالث) قال: اتانا كتاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم بارض جهينة قال: وانا غلام شاب قبل وفاته بشهر او شهرين ((ان لا تنتفعوا من الميتة بإهاب ولا عصب))
(Third Chain) Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ukeem Juhani رضي الله عنه says: A letter from the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم came to us in the land of Juhainah, while I was a young boy at the time. This was one or two months before the passing of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. It was written in it: "Do not benefit from the skins and tendons of carrion."

(وعنه من طريق رابع) قال: جاءنا، او قال: كتب إلينا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ((ان لا تنتفعوا من الميتة بإهاب ولا عصب))
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ukeem Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote a letter to us stating, "Do not benefit from the skin of a dead animal nor from its tendons."

(وعنه من طريق خامس) انه قال: قريء علينا كتاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ((ان لا تستمتعوا من الميتة بإهاب ولا عصب))
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ukeem Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) says: This letter from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was read to us: "Do not benefit from the skin and tendons of carrion."

Chapter on Purifying the Vessels of Disbelievers and the Permissibility of Using Them After Washing
Hadith Number: 432
عن ابي ثعلبة الخشني رضي الله عنه قال: قلت: يا رسول الله! إنا اهل سفر نمر باليهود والنصارى والمجوس ولا نجد غير آنيتهم، قال: ((فإن لم تجدوا غيرها فاغسلوها بالماء ثم كلوا فيها واشربوا))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Tha’labah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I said,“O Messenger of Allah! We are people who travel, and we often pass by the Jews, Christians, and Magians, and we can only find their utensils?”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“So if you cannot find other utensils, then wash them with water and use them for eating and drinking.”
