Majma’ bin Yahya Ansari says: I was with Sayyiduna Abu Umamah bin Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) and he was facing the muezzin. The muezzin said“Allahu Akbar”twice, and in response, Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) also said“Allahu Akbar”twice. The muezzin said“Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah”twice, and Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) also said“Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah”twice. Then the muezzin said“Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah”twice, so Sayyiduna Abu Umamah also said“Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah”twice. Then he turned to me and said: Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to me from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in this same manner.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) used to call the adhan at the time when the sun declined, and he would not leave out any word of it. Then he would not say the iqamah until the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out; however, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out and he saw him, he would then say the iqamah.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Let not Bilal’s call to prayer prevent any of you from your pre-dawn meal (suhoor), for he only calls the adhan so that the one who is standing (in prayer) may return and the one who is sleeping may awaken. And (the true dawn) does not appear in this way (rising upwards), rather it spreads out in this way (across the horizon).”And Ibn Abi ‘Adi Abu ‘Umar, while explaining this example, joined his fingers together and bent them, and made a gap between his index fingers.

Sayyiduna Sa’ib bin Yazid رضي الله عنه narrates that during the time of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar رضي الله عنهما, there used to be only one mu’adhdhin for Jumu’ah and all other prayers, until Sayyiduna Uthman رضي الله عنه became the caliph. Sayyiduna Sa’ib bin Yazid رضي الله عنه says that on the day of Jumu’ah, when the Messenger صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم would sit on the pulpit, Sayyiduna Bilal رضي الله عنه would call the adhan, and when the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم would descend, Sayyiduna Bilal رضي الله عنه would call the iqamah.
