Chapter on the Beginning of the Adhan, the Dream of Abdullah ibn Zayd, and the Reason for the Legislation of the Additional Call at Fajr
Hadith Number: 1266
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid bin Abd Rabbah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had ordered the bell to be rung to gather people for prayer, and although this was disliked by him due to its resemblance to the Christians, I was asleep when a man passed by me carrying a bell in his hand. I said to him: O servant of Allah! Do you wish to sell the bell? He replied: What will you do with it? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I told him that we would call people to prayer with it. He said: Shall I not guide you to something better than this? Abdullah bin Zaid said: I said to him, Why not! So he said: You should say these words: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Hayya ‘ala-s-Salah, Hayya ‘ala-s-Salah, Hayya ‘ala-l-Falah, Hayya ‘ala-l-Falah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah. Then he stepped back a little and said: When the prayer is about to begin, say these words: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Hayya ‘ala-s-Salah, Hayya ‘ala-l-Falah, Qad qamatis Salah, Qad qamatis Salah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When morning came, I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and related my dream. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If Allah wills, without doubt, this is a true dream. Abdullah! Stand with Bilal and have him repeat the words of your dream so that he may call the Adhan with them, for he has a better and louder voice than you. Abdullah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I stood with Bilal and recited the words to him, and he called the Adhan with them. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) heard these words in his house, he hurriedly came out, dragging his cloak, and said: (O Messenger of Allah!) By the One Who has sent you with the truth! I have seen a dream like this as well. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: FALILLAHIL HAMD (All praise is due to Allah).

A hadith similar to this is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) through another chain, and in it, there is further mention of this matter. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the call to prayer (adhan) to be given. Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), used to call the adhan with these same words and would call the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for prayer. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid says: One day, Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) went to call you for the Fajr prayer in the morning, and he was told that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sleeping, so Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) loudly proclaimed: "As-salatu khayrun minan-nawm" (Prayer is better than sleep). Sa'id bin al-Musayyib says: So these words were included in the adhan for Fajr. (1267)

Sayyiduna Mu’adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) says: An Ansari man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I saw a dream, it seemed to me as if I was awake, a man descended from the sky to one side of a garden in Madinah, wearing two green sheets over himself. He called the adhan with two-word phrases, then sat down, then he called the iqamah with two-word phrases. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You have seen the best thing; teach these words to Bilal. Sayyiduna ‘Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Indeed, I also saw such a dream, but he has preceded me.

When Abdul Aziz bin Abdul Malik bin Abi Mahzura prepared to send Abdullah bin Muhairiz, who was an orphan raised by Sayyiduna Abu Mahzura (may Allah be pleased with him), towards Syria, Abdullah bin Muhairiz said: I said to Abu Mahzura (may Allah be pleased with him),“O uncle! I am going towards Syria and I think I will be questioned about your call to prayer (adhan).”Abdul Aziz says that Abdullah bin Muhairiz told him that Abu Mahzura (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him:“Alright, I will tell you about my adhan. I went out with some people, and according to one narration, with ten young men. We were on a path in Hunayn, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was returning from Hunayn. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) met us on a path. Then the muezzin of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called the adhan for prayer. We heard the voice of the muezzin and, stepping aside from the path, began to imitate him and make noise in jest. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent some people to call us, and we came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and stood before him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: ‘Who among you is the one whose loud voice I heard?’ All the people pointed towards me, and they were truthful. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) let everyone go and kept me back, and said: ‘Stand up and call the adhan for prayer.’ I stood up, although the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his command were most disliked by me. Nevertheless, I stood before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) himself taught me the adhan, saying: Say: ALLAHU AKBAR, ALLAHU AKBAR, A -HADU ALLA ILAHA ILLALLAH, A -HADU ALLA ILAHA ILLALLAH, A -HADU ANNA MUHAMMADAN RASULULLAH, A -HADU ANNA MUHAMMADAN RASULULLAH. Then he said: Raise your voice and say again: A -HADU ALLA ILAHA ILLALLAH, A -HADU ALLA ILAHA ILLALLAH, A -HADU ANNA MUHAMMADAN RASULULLAH, A -HADU ANNA MUHAMMADAN RASULULLAH, HAYYA ‘ALAS-SALAH, HAYYA ‘ALAS-SALAH, HAYYA ‘ALAL-FALAH, HAYYA ‘ALAL-FALAH, ALLAHU AKBAR, ALLAHU AKBAR, LA ILAHA ILLALLAH. When I completed the adhan, he called me and gave me a pouch in which there was some silver. Then he placed his hand on Abu Mahzura’s forehead and passed it over his face twice, then over his hands twice, then struck his hand on his chest until the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reached Abu Mahzura’s navel. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: BARAKALLAHU FEEK (May Allah bless you). I said: O Messenger of Allah! Command me to give the adhan in Makkah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I have given you this command. Sayyiduna Abu Mahzura (may Allah be pleased with him) says: All the dislike I had for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) vanished, and instead, love for him was created in my heart. Then (according to the command of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him) I went to the governor of Makkah, Attab bin Asid, and by the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I began to call the adhan for prayer. Abdul Aziz bin Abdul Malik says: Whoever among my family narrated this incident to me, it was according to the narration of Abdullah bin Muhairiz.

Sa’ib, the freed slave of Abu Mahdhurah, and Amr bin Abdul Malik bin Abu Mahdhurah, both heard from Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator reported, with some brevity, the narration similar to the previous hadith, except that in this one, it is mentioned to say the first takbir four times, and in addition, the following statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is mentioned: When you give the first adhan of the morning, say: "As-salatu khayrun minan-nawm, as-salatu khayrun minan-nawm" (Prayer is better than sleep, prayer is better than sleep), and when you give the iqamah, say twice: "Qad qamatis-salah, qad qamatis-salah" (The prayer has been established, the prayer has been established). Have you heard this? Sa’ib says: Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) neither cut the hair of his forehead nor parted it, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had passed his hand over it.
