Al-Fath al-Rabbani
اخْتِيَارُ اللَّحْدِ عَلَى الشَّقِّ وَتَعْمِيقِ الْقَبْرِ وَتَوْسِيعِهِ وَدَفْنِ الْاثْنَيْنِ وَالثَّلَاثَةِ فِي قَبْرٍ وَاحِدٍ إِذَا اقْتَضَى الْحَالُ ذَالِكَ
Preferring the niche grave over the trench, deepening and widening the grave, and burying two or three in one grave if necessary
Hadith Number: 3252
(وعنه من طريق ثالث) قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم: ((اللحد لنا والشق لاهل الكتاب))
(The third chain) The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The lahd (niche grave) is for us, and the shaqq (simple trench grave) is for the People of the Book.

Hadith Number: 3253
عن هشام بن عامر رضي الله عنه قال: جاءت الانصار إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم يوم احد فقالوا: يا رسول الله! اصابنا قرح وجهد، فكيف تامرنا؟ قال: ((احفروا واوسعوا (زاد في رواية: واعمقوا) واجعلوا الرجلين والثلاثة في القبر))، قالوا: فايهم نقدم؟ قال: ((اكثرهم قرآنا))، قال: فقدم ابي عامر بين يدي رجل او اثنين
Sayyiduna Hisham bin ‘Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: On the day of the Battle of Uhud, the Ansari Companions came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! We are very wounded and tired, (now regarding the burial of these martyrs) what do you command us? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Dig graves and make them wide and deep, and bury two or three men in each grave. They asked: Whom should we put forward among them? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The one who knows more Qur’an. Hisham says: Thus, my father ‘Amir was placed ahead of one or two men.

Hadith Number: 3254
(وعنه من طريق ثان) قال: قتل ابي يوم احد، فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم: ((احفروا واوسعوا واحسنوا، وادفنوا الاثنين والثلاثة في القبر، وقدموا اكثرهم قرآنا (وفي رواية اكثرهم اخذا للقرآن) وكان ابي ثالث ثلاثة وكان اكثرهم قرآنا فقدم))
(Second Chain) Sayyiduna Hisham (may Allah be pleased with him) says: My father was martyred on the day of the Battle of Uhud. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Dig graves, make them spacious, and make them well, and bury two or three individuals in each grave, and the one who has memorized more of the Qur'an, place him towards the front. My father was the third among three individuals; since he had memorized more of the Qur'an, he was placed ahead.

Hadith Number: 3255
عن عاصم بن كليب عن ابيه عن رجل من الانصار رضي الله عنه قال: خرجنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم في جنازة رجل من الانصار، وانا غلام مع ابي فجلس رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم على حفيرة القبر فجعل يوصي الحافر ويقول: ((اوسع من قبل الراس واوسع من قبل الرجلين، لرب عذق له في الجنة))
An Ansari companion narrates: We went out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, for the funeral of an Ansari. I was a small boy and had gone with my father. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sat near the grave’s pit and said to the one making the grave: Open the grave from the head side, make it wide from the feet side, for there are many clusters of dates for this deceased in Paradise.

Hadith Number: 3256
عن سعد بن ابي وقاص رضي الله عنه انه قال: الحدوا لي لحدا وانصبوا علي اللبن نصبا كما صنع برسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم
Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Make a lahd (niche) for me and place unbaked bricks over me in the same manner as was done with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

مِنْ أَيْنَ يُدْخَلُ الْمَيِّتُ قَبْرَهُ وَمَا يُقَالُ عِنْدَ ذَالِكَ وَمَنْ يُدْخِلُهُ، وَمَا جَاءَ فِي الْحَشْيِ فِي الْقَبْرِ وَانْتِظَارِ الْفَرَاغِ مِنَ الدَّفْنِ
From where the deceased is entered into his grave, what is said at that time, who enters him, what is reported regarding filling the grave, and waiting until burial is finished
Hadith Number: 3257
عن ابي امامة رضي الله عنه قال: لما وضعت ام كلثوم بنت رسول الله رضي الله عنها في القبر، قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم: {منها خلقناكم وفيها نعيدكم ومنها نخرجكم تارة اخرى}، قال: ثم لا ادري اقال باسم الله، وفي سبيل الله، وعلى ملة رسول الله ام لا، فلما بني عليها لحدها طفق يطرح إليهم الجبوب، ويقول: ((سدوا خلال اللبن))، ثم قال: ((اما إن هذا ليس بشيء ولكنه يطيب بنفس الحي))
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyidah Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her), was placed in the grave, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse {مِنْہَا خَلَقْنَاکُمْ … … تَارَۃً أُخْرٰی} (Surah Ta-Ha, 55) (We created you from it (the earth), and into it We shall return you, and from it We shall bring you forth once more). Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I do not know whether after this the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this supplication or not: BISMILLAH, WA FI SABILILLAH, WA ‘ALA MILLATI RASULILLAH. (With the name of Allah, in the way of Allah, and according to the way of the Messenger of Allah, we bury). When the grave was sealed with bricks, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) threw some clay towards the people and said: Fill the gaps between the bricks with this. Then he said: This is not something necessary, but it just gives some comfort to the living.

Hadith Number: 3258
عن ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما عن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم قال: ((إذا وضعتم موتاكم في القبر، فقولوا: باسم الله وعلى ملة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you lower your deceased into the grave, recite this supplication: بِاسْمِ اللّٰہِ وَعَلٰی مِلَّۃِ رَسُوْلِ اللّٰہِ (In the name of Allah and upon the way of the Messenger of Allah).

Hadith Number: 3259
حدثنا عبد الله حدثني ابي ثنا هشيم انا خالد عن ابن سيرين ان انس بن مالك رضي الله عنه شهد جنازة رجل من الانصار، قال: فاظهروا الاستغفار، فلم ينكر ذلك انس، قال هشيم: قال خالد في حديثه: وادخلوه من قبل رجل القبر، وقال هشيم مرة: إن رجلا من الانصار مات بالبصرة فشهده انس بن مالك فاظهروا له الاستغفار
Ibn Sirin says that Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) attended the funeral of an Ansari man. The people prayed for forgiveness for him in a loud voice, and Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) did not object to them. Khalid, the narrator, while relating this hadith, said: They lowered the deceased into the grave from the side of the feet. And Hisham, the narrator, once narrated this hadith as follows: An Ansari man passed away in Basra, and Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) also attended his funeral. The people prayed for forgiveness for the deceased in a loud voice.

Hadith Number: 3260
عن انس بن مالك رضي الله عنه قال: شهدنا ابنة لرسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ورسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم جالس على القبر، فرايت عينيه تدمعان، ثم قال: ((هل منكم من رجل لم يقارف الليلة؟))، قال سريج: يعني: ذنبا، فقال ابو طلحة: انا يا رسول الله! قال: ((فانزل))، قال: فنزل في قبرها
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were present at the funeral of one of the daughters of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting by the grave, and I saw that tears were flowing from his eyes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Is there anyone among you who has not had intercourse (with his wife) this night? Suraij said: Its meaning is sin. Sayyiduna Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! I am (that person). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then you go down (into the grave). So he went down into her grave.

Hadith Number: 3261
وعنه ايضا ان رقية رضي الله عنها لما ماتت قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم: ((لا يدخل القبر رجل قارف اهله))، فلم يدخل عثمان بن عفان رضي الله عنه القبر
It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyida Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her), passed away, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever has had intercourse with his wife tonight should not enter the grave. Thus, Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) did not enter the grave.
