Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that Sayyiduna Abu Tha’labah al-Khushani (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I have trained dogs, tell me in detail about their hunting. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you have hunting dogs, then whatever game they restrain for you, it is permissible to eat. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Whether I am able to slaughter it or not? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, whether you are able to slaughter it or not, in both cases it will be permissible. He said: Even if the dog has eaten from it? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Even if the dog has eaten from it. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Tell me about the animal hunted with a bow. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whatever you hunt with a bow, eat it. He said: Whether I am able to slaughter it or not? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, whether you are able to slaughter it or not. He said: If the game becomes hidden from sight, will it still be permissible? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If it becomes hidden, it is permissible as long as it does not develop a foul smell due to change or there is no mark of any arrow other than your own. He said: O Messenger of Allah! When we are compelled, give a ruling regarding eating from the vessels of the Magians. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you are compelled to eat from their vessels, wash them with water and then cook food in them.

Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Tha’labah al-Khushani (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I said,“O Messenger of Allah! We live in the land of the People of the Book. Can we eat from their utensils? And we are in a land suitable for hunting. I hunt with my bow or with my trained dog, and I also hunt with my dog that is not trained. Now, please tell me about these matters.”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“As for what you have said, that you are in the land of the People of the Book and what is the ruling about eating from their utensils, the verdict is that if you find utensils other than theirs, then do not eat from theirs. If you do not find utensils other than theirs, then wash them and eat from them. As for what you have said, that you are in a land of hunting: if you recited ‘Bismillah’ when hunting with your bow, then eat that game. And when you recited ‘Bismillah’ before sending your trained dog for hunting, then eat that game as well. And if you hunted with an untrained dog, if you slaughter it (the animal) then eat it, and if it dies before being slaughtered, then do not eat it.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he taught me about Islam and explained to me how I should perform every prayer at its appointed time. Then he said to me: O Ibn Hatim! What will be your condition when you will ascend the forts of Yemen, and you will fear none except Allah, until you will descend into the forts of Hira? He says, I asked: Where will the horsemen and footmen (criminals) of the tribe of Tayy be? He said: Allah Almighty will suffice you against Tayy and other people. I said: O Messenger of Allah! We hunt with dogs and hawks, what is lawful for us from their catch? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The hunting dogs which you have trained, with the training Allah has given you, you may eat what they catch for you, provided you have mentioned the name of Allah over it. And if you release a dog or a hawk and mention the name of Allah, then whatever they catch and hold for you, eat it. I said: Even if they kill the prey? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Even if they kill it, as long as they have not eaten from it themselves, then they have caught it for you. I said: Now tell me, if when we release our dog, other dogs join it, then what is the ruling? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not eat the prey until you know that your dog alone caught it. I said: O Messenger of Allah! We hunt with the middle thick part of the arrow, what is lawful for us from it? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whatever prey dies from that part of the arrow, do not eat it, unless you slaughter it yourself.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about hunting with a dog. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you send your trained dog and recite Bismillah, and the dog catches the prey, if you find it while it is still alive, then slaughter it. And if the dog has killed the prey, then also you may eat it. But if the dog has eaten from the prey itself, then do not eat it, because in that case it means the dog has kept it for itself.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you release your dog for hunting and it eats from the catch, then do not eat that game, because it means the dog has kept it for itself. And when you release your dog and it does not eat from it, then eat it, because it has kept the game for its owner.

Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said,“O Messenger of Allah! We are people who hunt, so give us guidance regarding this.”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any of you throws his arrow at the game, let him say ‘Bismillah’. If the arrow strikes the game and kills it, then eat it. But if the game is wounded and falls into water and dies there, then do not eat it, for it may have died by drowning in the water. And if the arrow strikes the game and you find it after one or two days, and there is no mark on it except your arrow, then if you wish, you may eat it. And when you send your dog after the game, say ‘Bismillah’ at the time of sending it. If the dog kills the game, then eat it. But if the dog eats from the game, then do not eat it, for the dog has caught it for itself, not for the hunter. If you send your dog for hunting and other dogs join it, and you did not say ‘Bismillah’ when sending them, then do not eat it, for you do not know which of them killed the game.

Sayyiduna ‘Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrates that I asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the ruling regarding game that dies due to being struck by the thick middle part of an arrow. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If the arrow strikes the game from the sharp side, then eat it; and if it strikes from the thick side, it is like an animal killed with a stick, and it is not permissible to eat it. I asked about hunting with a dog. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you send your dog for hunting and you have mentioned the name of Allah over it, if the dog catches the game, then eat it. But if you find another dog along with your dog, and you fear that perhaps the other dog killed it, then do not eat the game, because you recited Bismillah over your dog, but not over the other dog.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I said,“O Messenger of Allah! My father Hatim Tai used to maintain ties of kinship and do good deeds?”But you (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Indeed, your father attained what he intended by his actions.”By this, you (peace and blessings be upon him) meant fame and show. I said,“O Messenger of Allah! I shoot arrows, but sometimes I have only a stone or a stick to slaughter the game.”You (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Recite ‘Bismillah’ and let blood flow from the game (i.e., use an instrument that causes blood to flow).”I said,“There are some foods that I avoid only out of fear of falling into sin?”You (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Do not avoid the food whose avoidance would resemble the ways of Christianity.”
