It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that when this verse was revealed {وَلِلّٰہِ عَلَی النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَیْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَیْہِ سَبِیلًا} … Pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed to Allah by all people who can find a way to do it. The people said: O Messenger of Allah! Is Hajj obligatory every year? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. They asked again: Is Hajj obligatory every year? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, and if I had said yes, it would have become obligatory every year. Then Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: {یٰٓاَیُّھَا الَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْا لَا تَسْئــَـلُوْا عَنْ اَشْیَاء َ اِنْ تُبْدَ لَکُمْ تَسُؤْکُمْ وَاِنْ تَسْئــَـلُوْا عَنْہَا حِیْنَیُنَزَّلُ الْقُرْاٰنُ تُبْدَ لَکُمْ عَفَا اللّٰہُ عَنْہَا وَاللّٰہُ غَفُوْرٌ حَلِیْمٌ۔} … O you who believe! Do not ask about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble. But if you ask about them while the Qur’an is being revealed, they will be made plain to you. Allah has pardoned that, and Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Forbearing.

Narrated by Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): A man said, "O Messenger of Allah! Who is my father?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "Your father is so-and-so." Then this verse was revealed: {یٰٓاَیُّھَا الَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْا لَا تَسْئَـلُوْا عَنْ اَشْیَائَ اِنْ تُبْدَ لَکُمْ تَسُؤْکُمْ وَاِنْ تَسْئَـلُوْا عَنْہَا حِیْنَیُنَزَّلُ الْقُرْاٰنُ تُبْدَ لَکُمْ عَفَا اللّٰہُ عَنْہَا وَاللّٰہُ غَفُوْرٌ حَلِیْمٌ۔} … O you who have believed! Do not ask about things which, if they are made apparent to you, will distress you. But if you ask about them while the Qur'an is being revealed, they will be made apparent to you. Allah has pardoned that, and Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Forbearing.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Amir Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that one of them was martyred in the battle of Autas. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: O Abu Amir! Why did you not change this evil (i.e., why did you not stop him from it)? In response, he recited this verse: {یَا أَ یُّہَا الَّذِینَ آمَنُوْا عَلَیْکُمْ أَ نْفُسَکُمْ لَا یَضُرُّکُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اہْتَدَیْتُمْ} … O you who have believed! Upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided. Upon hearing this, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry and said: Where have you gone? The meaning of this verse is that O believers! When you have become rightly guided, then the misguided disbelievers will not harm you.

Qais narrates that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and, after praising Allah Almighty, said: O people! You recite this verse: {یَا أَ یُّہَا الَّذِینَ آمَنُوْا عَلَیْکُمْ أَ نْفُسَکُمْ لَا یَضُرُّکُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اہْتَدَیْتُمْ} … O you who have believed! Upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided. While we heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that when people see evil and do not change it, it is near that Allah Almighty will afflict them with a general punishment. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Avoid lying, for lying is something different from faith.

It is narrated from Jisrah bint Dajajah that she went for ‘Umrah, and when she reached the place of Rabdhah on the way, she heard Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrating this hadith: He said: One night, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) stood in prayer for ‘Isha and led the people in this prayer. When he finished, the Companions stepped back and began to pray. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that they had stepped back to pray, he went to his house. Then, when he saw that the place had become empty of people, he returned to his place and began to pray. Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I stood behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he gestured for me to stand on his right side, so I stood on his right. Then Sayyiduna Ibn Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) came and stood behind both of us, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured for him to stand on his left side, so he stood on his left. The three of us continued to pray in this manner, each one praying his own prayer and reciting from the Qur’an as he wished. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood in prayer with only one verse of the Qur’an, repeating it until the morning prayer. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the Fajr prayer, I (Abu Dharr) gestured to Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) to ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about his action the previous night, what was his purpose in repeating only one verse, but he said: I will not ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), unless he speaks to me. Then I said: May my parents be sacrificed for you! You spent the whole night with only one verse, while you have the entire Qur’an memorized. If any of us had done this, we would have been displeased with him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I prayed for my Ummah. I said: Then what answer was given to your prayer? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I was given such an answer that if most people were to know of it, they would rely on it and even abandon prayer. I said: Should I not give people the glad tidings of this? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Why not, certainly do so. I walked quickly and was still within a stone’s throw when Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! You have sent Abu Dharr to give glad tidings to the people, and because of this, they will become lax in worship. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called me back, saying: Abu Dharr, come back. So I returned.

It is narrated from Ubaidullah bin Ziyad, he says: I went to the two sons of Basr and said to them: May Allah have mercy on you, tell me about this matter: a man rides his mount, strikes it with a whip, pulls its reins—have you heard any hadith from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding this? They said: No, we have not heard anything from him (peace and blessings be upon him) about this. Suddenly, a woman called out from inside the house and said: O questioner! Indeed, Allah the Exalted has said: {وَمَا مِنْ دَابَّۃٍ فِی الْأَ رْضِ وَلَا طَائِرٍ یَطِیرُ بِجَنَاحَیْہِ إِلَّا أُمَمٌ أَ مْثَالُکُمْ مَا فَرَّطْنَا فِی الْکِتَابِ مِنْ شَیْئٍ} … And there is no creature that moves on the earth nor a bird that flies with its two wings but they are communities like you. The two brothers said: This is our sister, she is older than us, she met the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that Allah Almighty said: {قُلْ ہُوَ الْقَادِرُ عَلٰٓی اَنْ یَّبْعَثَ عَلَیْکُمْ عَذَابًا مِّنْ فَوْقِکُمْ اَوْ مِنْ تَحْتِ اَرْجُلِکُمْ اَوْ یَلْبِسَکُمْ شِیَعًا وَّیُذِیْقَ بَعْضَکُمْ بَاْسَ بَعْضٍ اُنْظُرْ کَیْفَ نُصَرِّفُ الْاٰیٰتِ لَعَلَّہُمْ یَفْقَہُوْنَ۔} … Say, "He is able to send punishment upon you from above you or from beneath your feet, or to confuse you in sects and make you taste the violence of one another." See how We explain the signs in various ways so that they may understand. Then Sayyiduna Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said: These are four matters, all four are forms of punishment, all are bound to occur, in fact, they occurred twenty-five years after the passing of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), one is that people were divided into sects, and the second is that they made each other taste punishment, the remaining two are also bound to occur, and they are: sinking into the earth and the raining of stones.
