Chapter on What Has Been Narrated Regarding Ammar ibn Yasir, may Allah be pleased with him
Hadith Number: 11855
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, who says: I was sitting in the service of the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when Sayyiduna Ammar, may Allah be pleased with him, came and sought permission to enter. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Grant him permission to enter; welcome to the best and most splendid man.

It is narrated from Salim bin Abi J'ad that Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) summoned some companions (may Allah be pleased with them), including Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him), and said: I want to ask you something, and my intention is that you tell me the truth. I ask you by Allah: Do you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to give preference to the Quraysh over other people when giving something? And among the Quraysh, he used to give preference to Banu Hashim? Upon hearing this, the people remained silent. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If the keys to Paradise were in my hands, I would give the keys to Banu Umayyah until all these people entered Paradise. Then he sent a message to Sayyiduna Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said to them: Shall I tell you something about him (i.e., Ammar, may Allah be pleased with him)? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was holding my hand, and we were walking in Batha, until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) and his parents, and they were being tortured for accepting Islam. The father of Sayyiduna Ammar (Sayyiduna Yasir, may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! How long will this continue? The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Be patient. Then he said: O Allah! Forgive the family of Yasir. (Although I know that) You have already forgiven them.

It is narrated from Hasan Basri that a man said to Sayyiduna Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with him): What is your opinion about the person whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) loved throughout his life—would he not be a righteous man? He replied: Why not. So the man said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from this world, he had appointed you as his governor. Sayyiduna Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He did appoint me as governor, but by Allah! I do not know whether he appointed me because of his love for me or to seek my help. However, I will tell you that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from this world, he loved two men: one was Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and the other was Sayyiduna Ammar ibn Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hadith Number: 11860
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin Taghlib (may Allah be pleased with him) that war booty came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he distributed it among some people and left out others. Those whom he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not give any share expressed displeasure. When this matter reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he ascended the pulpit, praised and glorified Allah, and then said: I give to some people and leave out others, even though those whom I do not give are more beloved to me than those to whom I give. I give to those whose hearts have greed and desire, and those whose hearts Allah Almighty has filled with contentment and goodness, I entrust them to the blessings Allah has granted them. Amr bin Taghlib (may Allah be pleased with him) is among such people. Sayyiduna Amr bin Taghlib (may Allah be pleased with him), upon hearing this about himself, said: I was sitting before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and nothing is dearer to me than these words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), not even red camels.

Chapter on What Has Been Narrated Regarding Amr ibn al-Jamuh, may Allah be pleased with him
Hadith Number: 11861
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Amr bin Jamuh (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and submitted: O Messenger of Allah! What do you think, if I am martyred fighting in the way of Allah, will I be able to walk properly in Paradise with this leg of mine? In fact, he was lame in one leg. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, absolutely. Then he, his nephew Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin Haram (may Allah be pleased with him), and one of his slaves—all three were martyred in the Battle of Uhud. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by them and said: It is as if I am seeing you walking properly in Paradise with this leg of yours. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that all three be buried in a single grave.

Shaddad bin Abdullah Dimashqi, who had the honor of meeting several Companions, narrates that Sayyiduna Abu Umamah said:“Amr bin Abasah, who used to pay blood money on behalf of those unable to do so! You are from Banu Sulaym. How do you claim that you were the fourth person to enter the fold of Islam?”He replied:“Even in the Age of Ignorance, I considered people misguided and did not give any importance to idols. Then I heard a man who used to talk about Makkah and narrate things. I mounted my ride and came to Makkah Mukarramah. I saw that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was secretly preaching Islam, and his people were dominant over him and inflicted oppression upon him. I managed to reach him by adopting gentleness. I asked: ‘What is your claim?’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘I am Allah’s Prophet.’ I asked: ‘What does it mean to be Allah’s Prophet, or what is its implication?’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘The meaning of being Allah’s Prophet is that I am Allah’s Messenger and His envoy.’ I asked: ‘Has Allah sent you as a Messenger?’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Yes, absolutely.’ I asked: ‘With what message and invitation has Allah sent you?’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘That people should believe in the Oneness of Allah, associate none with Him, break the idols, and maintain ties of kinship.’ I asked: ‘What kind of people are with you in this call?’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘One free man and one slave.’ At that time, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: ‘I want to become your follower.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘You cannot bear this in the current circumstances. However, return to your people, and when you hear of my dominance, come to me.’ After that, I returned to my people, having accepted Islam. Later, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) migrated to Madinah Munawwarah. I kept inquiring about the situation until a small caravan came from Yathrib. I asked them about the Makkan who had come to them, what was his position? They informed me that his people had intended to kill him, but they did not succeed in their intention. Allah Almighty intervened between him and their evil intention, and people were joining him rapidly. Then I mounted my ride and came to Madinah Munawwarah and presented myself before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! Do you recognize me?’ He said: ‘Are you not the one who came to me in Makkah?’ I said: ‘Yes.’ Then I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! Teach me what Allah has taught you and of which I am unaware.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘When you have performed the Fajr prayer, do not pray until the sun rises. Even after the sun rises, do not pray until it has ascended higher, for the sun rises between the two horns of Satan, and at that time the disbelievers prostrate to it. When the sun has risen to the height of one or two spears, then you may pray, for at the time of prayer, Allah’s angels are present. You may pray until the sun is at its zenith; when the sun is at its zenith, do not pray, for at that time Hell is kindled. When the shadow declines, pray, for at the time of prayer, Allah’s angels are present. Then you may pray until Asr. When you have performed the Asr prayer, refrain from praying until sunset, for when the sun sets, the disbelievers prostrate to it.’ I said: ‘O Prophet of Allah! Teach me the rulings of ablution as well.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘When any of you approaches the water for ablution, rinses his mouth, draws water into his nose and expels it, his sins exit from his mouth and nostrils with the water. Then when he washes his face as Allah has commanded him, his sins exit from the edges of his beard with the water. Then when he washes his arms up to the elbows, the sins of his hands exit from the tips of his fingers. Then when he wipes his head, the sins of his head exit from the ends of his hair with the water. Then when he washes his feet as Allah has commanded him, the sins of his feet exit from the tips of his toes with the water. After that, if he stands and praises Allah as is His due and performs two units of prayer, he becomes as pure from his sins as the day his mother gave birth to him.’ The student of Amr bin Abasah, Abu Umamah, asked: ‘O Amr bin Abasah! Speak carefully. Did you hear all this directly from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? Does all this happen to a person at one time?’ Sayyiduna Amr bin Abasah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: ‘O Abu Umamah! Now I have grown old, my bones have become weak, and my time of death is near. I have no need to lie against Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). If I had heard this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) only once, twice, or three times, I would not have narrated it. I have heard this hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) seven times, or even more than that.’

It is narrated from Habib bin Aws that Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) directly told me that when we returned from the Battle of the Confederates (Ahzab) and the trench, I gathered some Qurayshi people—those who understood my status and listened to my words attentively. I said to them: By Allah! You know that in my view, Muhammad’s call will surely prevail over all, and we do not like this. I have an opinion; now tell me, what do you think about it? They said: Yes, what is your opinion? I said: I think we should go to the Negus (Najashi) and stay there. If Muhammad prevails over our people, we will be with the Negus, and being under his rule is more preferable to us than being under Muhammad’s rule. And if our people prevail, we are well-known, and we will receive only good from them. The people said: Indeed, your opinion is appropriate. Then I said to them: Gather wealth to give him gifts; he liked leather from our region as a present. So we collected a lot of leather to give him and set out, and we reached him. By Allah! We were with him when Amr bin Umayyah al-Damri also arrived there. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent him to discuss the matter of Ja’far and his companions. He came to the Negus and then left. Now I said to my companions: This is Amr bin Umayyah al-Damri. If I go to the Negus and ask him to hand him over to me, he will do so, and I will kill him, and the Quraysh will acknowledge that I have fulfilled their right by killing Muhammad’s envoy. So I went to his court and, as I used to do before, performed a prostration of respect upon entering. He said: Welcome, friend! Have you brought any gifts for me from your homeland? I said: Yes, O King! I have brought a large quantity of leather for you. Then I presented it to him. He liked it very much and expressed that he needed it. After that, I said: O King! I saw a man here who has just left your presence; he is the envoy of our enemy. Hand him over to me so that I may kill him; he is the killer of our honored and best people. Upon hearing this, the Negus became enraged. He stretched out his hand and struck his own nose so hard that I feared he might have broken the bone of his nose. Out of fear, I felt that if the earth were to split open, I would enter it. Then I said: O King! By Allah, if I had known that this would displease you so much, I would never have made such a request. The Negus said: The angel who used to come to Musa (Moses), now comes to the man you speak of—should I hand over his envoy to you so that you may kill him? I said: O King! Is he really like that? He said: O Amr! Woe to you, obey me and follow him. By Allah, he is surely upon the truth, and he will certainly prevail over his opponents, just as Musa (Moses) prevailed over Pharaoh and his armies. I said: Take my pledge of allegiance for Islam on his behalf. The Negus said: Very well. So he extended his hand, and I pledged allegiance to him for Islam. Then I went back to my companions, while my opinion had completely changed from before, but I concealed my acceptance of Islam from them. Then I set out towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to become Muslim. I met Khalid bin Walid, who was coming from Mecca; this was before the conquest of Mecca. I asked him: Abu Sulaiman! Where are you coming from? He said: By Allah! The path has become clear; Muhammad is surely a Prophet. By Allah, I am going to become Muslim. How long will I keep wandering here and there? I said: By Allah, I too have come only to accept Islam. We reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Khalid bin Walid went ahead. He accepted Islam and pledged allegiance. After him, I also approached and said: O Messenger of Allah! I pledge allegiance to you on the condition that all my previous sins are forgiven, and I forgot to mention the sins that might occur later. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Amr! Pledge allegiance; indeed, Islam wipes out all previous sins, and migration erases all previous sins. So I pledged allegiance to him and then returned. Ibn Ishaq says: A man whom I consider trustworthy told me that Sayyiduna Uthman bin Talha bin Abi Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) was also with both of them; when these two entered Islam, he also became Muslim with them.
