Chapter on What Has Been Narrated Regarding Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As, may Allah be pleased with them
Hadith Number: 11816
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: No companion had more knowledge of the hadiths of the Messenger than me except Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), and the reason for this was that he used to write down the hadiths and memorize them, while I only memorized them orally and did not write them. He sought permission from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to write down the hadiths, so he granted him permission.

It is narrated from Hanzala bin Khuwailid Anbari, he says: I was present with Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) when two men came to him and started arguing about the head of Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him), each claiming that he had killed him. Upon hearing their words, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Each of you may take pride in this deed of his, but I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say that the rebellious group will kill him. After hearing this hadith from him, Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If this is the case, then why do you support us? He replied: My father had complained about me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: As long as your father is alive, continue to obey him. Because of this hadith, I am with you people, but still, I do not take part in the fighting.

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Abi Hazil, who narrates from a Sheikh of the tribe of Nakha’, who says: I entered the mosque of Ilya (i.e., Bayt al-Maqdis) and performed two rak‘ahs of prayer behind a pillar. Another man also came and prayed near me. People flocked towards him. He was Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him). The envoy of Yazid bin Muawiyah came to summon him, so he said: He forbids me from narrating hadith, just as his father used to forbid me. I heard your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicating with these words:“I seek refuge in You from a soul that is never satisfied, from a heart that does not humble, from a supplication that is not heard, and from knowledge that does not benefit.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: My father was martyred in the Battle of Uhud. My sisters gave me their camel and sent me so that I could carry my father's body on that camel and bury him in the graveyard of Banu Salama tribe. So I and my companions went; the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting at the place of Uhud. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) learned of our intention, he called me and said: By Him in Whose hand is my soul! Your father will be buried with his other martyred brothers. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out from Madinah Munawwarah with the intention of fighting the polytheists. My father, Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), said to me: There is no harm if you stay with the people of Madinah and observe the outcome of this battle. By Allah! If I were not leaving my daughters behind after me, I would have preferred that you be martyred before my eyes. So I remained in Madinah Munawwarah awaiting the result of the battle, when my paternal aunt came, bringing my father and my uncle Amr bin Jamuh on a camel. I took them to Madinah Munawwarah so that I could bury them in our ancestral graveyard. Meanwhile, a caller announced: Beware! The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commands you to take the martyrs back to Uhud and bury them at the very places where they were martyred. So we took them back and buried them at their places of martyrdom.
During the caliphate of Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him), a man came to me and said: O Jabir bin Abdullah! The officials of Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) have opened your father's grave and his body has become exposed, and part of it has come out of the grave. When I reached there, I saw that he was in the same condition in which I had buried him; there was no change in him whatsoever, except that the wounds of his killing had changed. So I buried him again.

It is narrated from Hasan Basri that a man said to Sayyiduna Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with him): What is your opinion about the person whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) loved throughout his life—would he not be a righteous man? He replied: Why not. So the man said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from this world, he had appointed you as his governor. Sayyiduna Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He did appoint me as governor, but by Allah! I do not know whether he appointed me because of his love for me or to seek my help. However, I will tell you that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from this world, he loved two men: one was Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and the other was Sayyiduna Ammar ibn Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was performing prayer at night when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to him accompanied by Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He began reciting Surah An-Nisa and completed its recitation. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever wishes to recite the Qur’an as it was revealed, let him recite according to the recitation of Ibn Umm ‘Abd, i.e., Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him). Then he moved forward and Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) began to ask, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Ask Allah, you will be given; ask Allah, you will be given; ask Allah, you will be given. So among his supplications, he also made this supplication:“O Allah! I ask You for faith that does not turn back, for blessings that never end, and for the companionship of Your Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in the highest eternal Paradise.”After this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to give him glad tidings, but he saw that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had already preceded him in this matter. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Even though you have done this, the situation is that you always precede me in every good deed.
