Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: There was an Ansari girl under my guardianship, and I arranged her marriage. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me on the day of her wedding. He did not hear any singing or similar sounds, so he (peace be upon him) said: O Aisha! Did you not sing for her wedding? Will you not sing for her? Then he (peace be upon him) said: The Ansar like singing.

Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I came to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and at that time two girls were sitting with him, beating the duff and singing. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was resting with a cloth over his face. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) scolded the two girls, so the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) removed the cloth from his face and said: O Abu Bakr, let them be, for these are the days of Eid. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: When the Abyssinian delegation came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), they began to perform feats in the mosque. I saw the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) shielding me with his cloak, and I kept watching them as they performed in the mosque until I myself became bored. You can imagine how eager a young girl would be to watch such games and play.

Zuhri narrates: Saeed bin Musayyib told me this: Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) entered (the mosque) while the Abyssinians were performing feats in the mosque. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) scolded them, so the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: O Umar! Let them be, for they are the Banu Arfidah.

Section on Listening – Clarifying that the singing described was poetry from pre-Islamic days, not indecent love songs

Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to me while two girls from the Ansar were sitting with me, singing songs about the conduct of the Ansar on the occasion of the Battle of Bu'ath. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Are the instruments of Satan present in the house of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)?" This was during the days of Eid. So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "O Abu Bakr! Every nation has a specific Eid, and this is our Eid."

One of the girls recited this verse:“Among us is a Prophet who knows what will happen tomorrow.”The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Leave this and sing what you were singing before.
