Haram bin Hakeem narrates from his uncle Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“(Today) you are in a time in which jurists are many and preachers are few, those who ask are few and those who give are many. In this time, action is better than knowledge. But soon a time will come in which jurists will be few and preachers will be many, those who ask will be many and those who give will be few. In that time, knowledge will be better than action.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, the example of the companion of the Qur'an is like that of a camel tied with a rope; if he takes care of it, he will keep it restrained, and if he lets it go, it will run away."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr رضي الله عنه that he said: One day, I went to the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم at noon. He heard the voices of two men who were disputing about a verse. The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم came to us, and signs of anger could be seen on his face. He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "Those before you were destroyed only because they differed concerning the Book."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Nawwas bin Sam'an (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Do not argue about the Qur'an, and do not reject one part of the Book of Allah because of another part. By Allah! (There are times when) when a believer disputes with the Qur'an, he is overcome, and when a hypocrite argues obstinately with the Qur'an, he prevails."

Various purposes of Quranic education

Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say:“Learn the Qur’an and ask Allah for Paradise through it, before there come people who will learn it but will seek the world through it. There are three types of people who learn the Noble Qur’an: the man who boasts through it, the man who earns through it, and the person who recites it for the sake of Allah Almighty.”

Earlier generations of this Ummah had good, later ones evil; how should those desiring Paradise die?

Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Abd Rabb al-Ka'bah says: I entered Masjid al-Haram, and there, in the shade of the Ka'bah, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting and people were gathered around him. I came to him and sat there. He said: We were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and we camped at a place. Some people began to fix their tents, some were competing in archery, and some were busy with their animals. Suddenly, a caller from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) announced (to gather the people): «الصلاة جامعة» . So we gathered around the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "It was incumbent upon every prophet before me to teach his ummah every good that he knew and to warn them against every evil that he knew. (Fulfilling this duty, I say that) in the early period of this ummah there will be (peace and) safety, but in the later period (the sons of the ummah) will be afflicted with trials and undesirable matters. Tribulations will appear, and each subsequent tribulation will make the previous one seem lighter in comparison. A tribulation will arise, and seeing it, a believer will say: 'This is my destruction,' but it will pass. Then another tribulation will appear, and the believer will say upon seeing it: 'This is it (my destruction), this is it.' (In summary,) whoever wishes to be saved from Hell and admitted to Paradise, let his death come to him while he believes in Allah and the Last Day, and let him treat people as he would love to be treated by them. Whoever gives the pledge of allegiance to an imam, making his obedience binding upon himself, and gives him a sincere pledge and loves him from his heart, then he should obey him as much as he can. If another (caliph) comes and starts to dispute with him (rebels), then strike off the head of the latter." I (Abdur Rahman) drew closer to him and said: I adjure you by Allah! Did you hear this hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He placed his hands on his ears and heart and said: My ears heard and my heart remembered. I said: This is your cousin, Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), he commands us to consume our wealth unlawfully and to kill ourselves, while Allah the Exalted says: "O you who believe! Do not consume one another's wealth unjustly, except that it be trade by mutual consent among you, and do not kill yourselves. Surely Allah is Most Merciful to you." (Surah an-Nisa: 29) Upon hearing this, (Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As, may Allah be pleased with him) fell silent and then said: If he obeys Allah the Exalted, then obey him, and if he disobeys Allah, then do not obey him.

Sayyiduna Abu Waqqad Al-Laithi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, while we were sitting on a mat (or carpet): "Indeed, a tribulation will soon occur." The companions asked: O Messenger of Allah! What should we do in it? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stretched his hand towards the mat and grabbed it and said: "Do like this." Then one day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, a tribulation will soon occur." But most people could not hear what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said. Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O people! Do you not hear what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is saying? They asked: What did he say? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, a tribulation will soon occur." They asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is your command for us or what should we do at that time? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Return to your first matter."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "I am relating a hadith to you; those who are present should convey (my words) to those who are absent."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The person who acquires knowledge but does not convey it (to the people), is like the one who accumulates a treasure but does not spend from it."
