Allah’s statement: Among believers are men who fulfilled their covenant with Allah.
`Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that my uncle Anas bin Nadr (may Allah be pleased with him) did not participate in the Battle of Badr, so he submitted, "O Messenger of Allah! The very first battle that you (peace be upon him) fought against the polytheists, I was not present in it. Well, now if Allah gives me the opportunity to participate in any battle against the polytheists, then surely Allah will see what I do." Then when the day of the Battle of Uhud came and the Muslims fled, he said, "O Allah! I apologize for what the Muslims have done, and I disassociate myself from what the polytheists have done." Then he advanced and met Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him). He said, "O Sa'd! By the Lord of Nadr: 'Paradise is near. I am smelling the fragrance of Paradise from the other side of Uhud.'" Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say, "O Messenger of Allah! What Anas bin Nadr (may Allah be pleased with him) did, I could not do (even though I am also among the brave ones of Arabia)." Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that we found our uncle (in the battlefield) martyred, and there were more than eighty (80) wounds of swords, spears, and arrows on his body, and the polytheists had mutilated him (i.e., they had cut off his limbs, nose, ears, etc.), so except for his sister, no one recognized him. She recognized him by his fingers. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say that we think that this verse was revealed about him and such Muslims: "Among the believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allah..." Then he says that his sister, whose name was Rubayyi', broke the front teeth of a woman, so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordered retribution (qisas). Anas (bin Nadr, may Allah be pleased with him) submitted, "O Messenger of Allah! By Him Who has sent you with the truth, my sister's teeth will not be broken." Then the claimants became satisfied with blood money and forgave the retribution, so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Among the servants of Allah are some who, if they swear by Allah relying on Him, Allah fulfills it for them."

Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say that when the Holy Qur’an was written in a Mushaf (codex) by copying from scattered parchments, I could not find the verse (23) of Surah Al-Ahzab. I used to hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) reciting it. Then I found it only with Khuzaymah Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), whose testimony the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had considered equal to the testimony of two men. That verse was:“Among the believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allah; some of them have fulfilled their vow (by being martyred)....”

Doing righteous deeds before jihad.
Narrated by Sayyiduna Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him):
A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) equipped with weapons and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Should I go for jihad or (first) accept Islam?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "First accept Islam, then go for jihad." So he did so, and (in jihad) he was martyred. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "He did very little work but will receive a great reward."

One killed by an unknown arrow.
Narrated Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): Umm Rabi', the daughter of Bara', who was the mother of Haritha bin Suraqa, came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Tell me about Haritha." He had been killed on the day of Badr, struck by an unknown arrow. She said, "If he is in Paradise, I will be patient (knowing he is at ease), but if it is otherwise, then I will weep for him profusely." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Umm Haritha! (Not just one Paradise) There are many gardens (Paradises) within Paradise, and indeed your son is in the highest Paradise, Al-Firdaus."

One who fights solely to raise Allah’s word.
Narrated Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him):
A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, "Some people fight for war booty, some for fame, and some to show their bravery. So who is the one who fights in the way of Allah (fi sabilillah)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) replied: "Only the one who fights so that the word of Allah becomes supreme is the one who is in the way of Allah (fi sabilillah)."

Bathing after battle and being covered in dust.
Narrated by Umm al-Mu'minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her): When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) returned from (the battle of) Khandaq and had put down his weapons and taken a bath, Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to him and there was still dust on his head. Jibreel (peace be upon him) said, "You have put down your weapons, but I have not yet put mine down." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked, "Where to now?" Jibreel (peace be upon him) pointed towards Banu Qurayza and said, "That way." Umm al-Mu'minin (may Allah be pleased with her) says that then (immediately) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) set out in that direction.

If someone killed Muslims in disbelief, then accepted Islam and was martyred.
Narrated from Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Allah will smile at two men, one of whom killed the other, yet both will enter Paradise. One fought in the way of Allah and was martyred. Then Allah granted the killer the ability to repent (he became a Muslim), and he too was martyred (in the way of Allah)."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). At that time, he (peace be upon him) was in Khaybar. The Muslims had conquered Khaybar. I submitted, "O Messenger of Allah! (In the spoils of war) allot my share as well." Then one of the sons of Sa'id bin 'As said, "O Messenger of Allah! Do not allot his share." I said, "O Messenger of Allah! He is the killer of Ibn Qawqal (may Allah be pleased with him)." So the son of Sa'id bin 'As said, "How strange! (Abu Hurairah) who has come to us from the direction of Dhan (the name of a mountain) accuses me of killing a Muslim, whom Allah honored at my hands (i.e., with martyrdom) and did not disgrace me at his hands (i.e., by being killed and becoming a wretched corpse of Hellfire)."

Some preferred jihad over fasting.
`Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) did not observe (voluntary) fasts during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) due to participating in jihad (so that his strength would not diminish). Then, when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, I never saw him leaving the fast except on the days of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
