Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say, "Indeed, Satan has despaired of being worshipped by those who pray in the Arabian Peninsula (as he was worshipped in the days of ignorance), but he is hopeful that he will incite discord among them (i.e., he will provoke them to fight among themselves)."
Satan causing discord among worshippers.
Narrated from Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out from her at night. So, I felt jealous (she thought that the Prophet, peace be upon him, had gone to another wife). Then the Prophet, peace be upon him, returned and saw my condition, so he said,“O Aisha! What has happened to you? Have you become jealous?”I said,“Why should I not be jealous when someone like me (a young, beautiful woman) has a husband like you?”The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said,“Has your devil come to you?”I said,“O Messenger of Allah! Is there a devil with me?”He, peace be upon him, said,“Yes.”I said,“Is there a devil with every human being?”He, peace be upon him, said,“Yes.”Then I said,“O Messenger of Allah! Is there a devil with you too?”He, peace be upon him, said,“Yes, but my Lord has helped me against him until he has become submissive to me (so now he does not command me to do evil).”
Every person has a companion devil.
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Do you know what backbiting is? The people said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace be upon him) said: Backbiting is that you mention about your brother something which he would dislike (if he were present). The people said: O Messenger of Allah! What if that fault is actually present in our brother? He (peace be upon him) said: If that fault is in him, then you have backbitten him; and if it is not in him, then it is slander and false accusation.
Prohibition of backbiting.
‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that indeed Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:“Shall I not tell you what is the most heinous slander? It is tale-bearing which sows enmity among people.”And Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:“A person continues to speak the truth until he is recorded with Allah as truthful, and he continues to lie until he is recorded with Allah as a liar.”
Prohibition of tale-bearing.
Hammam bin Harith says: We were sitting in the mosque with Sayyiduna Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) when a man came and sat down with us. The people said to Sayyiduna Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) that this man conveys matters to the ruler. Sayyiduna Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him), intending for him to hear, said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, "The tale-bearer will not enter Paradise."
A tale-bearer will not enter Paradise.
The hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding this chapter has already been mentioned in the chapter of virtues. (See Hadith: 1744).
Condemnation of the two-faced person.
`Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Adhere to truthfulness, for truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man continues to speak the truth until he is recorded with Allah as a truthful person. And beware of lying, for lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Fire. A man continues to lie until he is recorded with Allah as a liar.
About truthfulness and lying.
Narrated from Sayyida Umm Kulthum bint Uqbah bin Abi Mu’it (may Allah be pleased with her), and she was among the first emigrant women who pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah, that she heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying:“He is not a liar who reconciles between people and says good things with the intention of bringing about reconciliation.”Ibn Shihab said:“I have not heard that lying is permitted except in three cases: in war, in order to reconcile between people, and what a man says to his wife and a wife to her husband (for the sake of pleasantness).”And in another narration, she says:“I have not heard that lying is permitted except in three cases: (that is, in war, in order to reconcile between people, and what a man says to his wife and a wife to her husband) (for the sake of pleasantness).”
When lying is permissible.
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a battle when a Muhajir struck an Ansari on the buttocks (either with his hand or with a sword). The Ansari called out, "O Ansar, come to help!" and the Muhajir called out, "O Muhajirin, come to help!" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "This is a call of the days of ignorance (Jahiliyyah)." The people said, "O Messenger of Allah! A Muhajir struck an Ansari on the buttocks." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Leave this, for it is a filthy thing." This news reached Abdullah bin Ubayy (the hypocrite), so he said, "Did the Muhajirin do this? By Allah, when we return to Madinah, the honorable person among us will surely expel the lowly one from there." (God forbid, this hypocrite considered himself honorable and called the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) lowly.) Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Messenger of Allah! Allow me to strike the neck of this hypocrite." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Leave him (O Umar)! Lest people say that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) kills his companions." (Although that accursed one deserved it, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not punish him out of wisdom.)
Prohibition of calls of ignorance (Jahiliyyah).
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When two people abuse each other, the sin will be upon the one who started it, as long as the oppressed does not exceed the limits.
