Atiyyah heard Rabee’ah al-Jurashi saying that a (messenger) came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said:“Your eyes should sleep, your ears should listen, and your heart should understand.”He (the Prophet) said:“So my eyes slept, my ears listened, and my heart understood.”He (the messenger) said:“It was said to me: A master built a house, spread a banquet, and sent a caller (to invite). Whoever accepted the invitation of the caller entered the house, ate from the banquet, and the master was pleased with him. But whoever did not accept the invitation of the caller neither entered the house nor ate from the banquet, and the master was displeased with him.”In this hadith, the master refers to Allah Almighty, the caller is Muhammad (peace be upon him), the house is Islam, and the banquet is Paradise.

It is narrated from Abu Uthman al-Nahdi that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out towards a gravelly land, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was with him. He made him sit down and drew a circle around him and said:“Stay within this circle, for many people will come to you. Do not speak to them, nor will they speak to you.”Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went in the direction he intended, and people began to come around the circle, but no one entered within the line, and they kept going towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) until, when it was the last part of the night, he (peace and blessings be upon him) returned and placed his head on my thigh as a pillow. And when he (peace and blessings be upon him) slept, he would snore. He was sleeping with his head on my thigh when a few men came, who were very handsome, wearing white clothes. Allah knows best the beauty and elegance they possessed. Then a group of them sat at his (peace and blessings be upon him) head and a group at his feet. Then they began to say among themselves,“We have not seen any servant who has been given what has been given to this Prophet (Muhammad) (peace and blessings be upon him). His eyes sleep but his heart remains awake. His example is like that of a chief who built a palace and spread a dining cloth in it and invited people to eat and drink. Then the people left.”At that moment, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also woke up and said:“Do you know who these people were?”They replied,“Allah and His Messenger know best.”He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“They were angels.”He said:“And did you understand the example they gave?”I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“(Allah) the Most Merciful made Paradise and invited His servants to it. So whoever accepted His invitation entered His Paradise, and whoever did not accept His invitation, He will punish and torment him.”

Sayyiduna Utbah bin Abdus-Sulami, may Allah be pleased with him, who was among the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), narrates that a man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah! What was your initial state?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "My nursing mother was from the tribe of Banu Sa'd bin Bakr. I went out with her son along with their sheep. We had nothing to eat or drink. I said (to my foster brother): O brother, go and bring some food from mother. So my brother went, and I remained alone with the flock (when I saw) two white birds, like vultures. One of them said to his companion: Is this the one? The other replied: Yes, this is the one. Then both rushed towards me, seized me, and laid me down on my back. They split open my belly, took out my heart, split it open, and removed two black clots from it. Then one of them said to his companion: Bring water of snow, and with it he washed my belly. Then he said: Bring water of hail, and with it he washed my heart. Then he said: Bring tranquility (sakinah) to me, and he sprinkled it over my heart. Then one said to the other: Place him in one pan of the scale and a thousand people from his Ummah in the other pan. Then one said to the other: Stitch him up, so they stitched me and sealed it with the seal of Prophethood."

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When I see those thousand above me, I become afraid that one of them might fall from that pan. After this incident, I became very frightened and went to my mother and told her the whole story, and she became afraid that perhaps I had been possessed. She said: I seek Allah's protection for you. Then she took her camel, made me sit in front, and she sat behind, until we reached my (biological) mother. She said to her: I have fulfilled my trust and responsibility, and then the nursing mother narrated to her what had happened to me. But my mother was not at all frightened; rather, she said: When he was born, I saw such a light emanate from within me that it illuminated the palaces of Syria."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) that I asked: O Messenger of Allah! How did you come to know and then become certain that you are a Prophet? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Dharr! Two angels came to me while I was on the stony ground of Makkah. One of them was coming down to the earth, but the other remained between the earth and the sky. One of them said to his companion: Is he the one? He replied: Yes, he is the one. Then he said: Weigh him against one man. So I was weighed against him and I was heavier. Then the angel said: Now weigh him against ten men. I was weighed against them and I was still heavier. Then he said: Weigh him against a hundred men. So I was weighed against those hundred men and I was heavier than them as well. Then he said: Now weigh him against a thousand men. So I was weighed against them and I was still heavier than them, as if I am seeing them falling from the scale pan." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One of them said to the other: If you weigh him against his entire Ummah, he will still be heavier than them."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey when a Bedouin came. When he approached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "Where are you intending to go?" He replied: "I intend to go to my family." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you desire goodness?" He asked: "What is that?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(It is) that you bear witness that there is no god but Allah, He is alone, He has no partner, and Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger and Prophet." He said: "Who will bear witness to what you say?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This thorny tree (bush) (will bear witness to it)." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called it, and although it was at the edge of the valley, it tore through the earth and came and stood before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked it to bear witness, and the tree bore witness three times that you are indeed as you have claimed. Then it returned to its place, and the Bedouin went back to his tribe saying that if they accepted what I say, I will bring them to you, otherwise I will return myself and stay with you.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that I set out on a journey with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He would go so far away to relieve himself that he would not be visible. We camped in such a barren plain where there was neither a tree nor a mountain. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jabir! Fill water in your bucket and come with us." Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We set out and became hidden from the people's sight and reached two trees whose distance between them was four arm-lengths. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Jabir, go to the tree and say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) says to you to join your companion tree so that I may sit behind you for privacy." He went and said so, and thus the tree joined the other, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went behind them (to relieve himself) and sat down. Then the trees returned to their places. After that, we mounted with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was sitting among us. It seemed as if birds were shading us. Then a woman came to him, and with her was her child. She said: O Messenger of Allah! The devil takes away my child three times a day. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the child and seated him between himself and the saddle and said: "O enemy of Allah, go away, I am the Messenger of Allah. Go away, O enemy of Allah, I am the Messenger of Allah." He said this three times, then returned the child to his mother. Then, when we returned from our journey and passed by the same place, that same woman came before us, driving two rams with her child, and said: O Messenger of Allah! Please accept this gift from me. By the One Who sent you with the truth, since then the devil has not come again. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take one ram and return the other to her." Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: After that, we set out, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was among us, and it seemed as if birds were shading us. Suddenly, we saw a frightened camel. When it came between the two sides of the road, it fell down in prostration. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat down and said: "Call the people, whose camel is this?" Some young men from the Ansar said: O Messenger of Allah! This is our camel. He said: "What is its matter?" They said: We have been drawing water from it for twenty years. There is a piece of fat in its body, so we intended to slaughter it and distribute it among our slaves, but it became agitated and ran away from us. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sell it to me." They said: No, O Messenger of Allah, you may take it as you wish. He said: "If you do not sell it, then treat it well until its death comes." At that time, the Muslims said: O Messenger of Allah, we are more deserving to prostrate to you than these animals. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not permissible for anyone to prostrate to another (human). If it were permissible, then women would have been allowed to prostrate to their husbands."
