It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came and with him were two slaves. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave one of them to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah's blessings be upon him) and said: "Do not beat him, I have been forbidden from beating those who pray, and since we have come, I have seen him performing prayer." And he gave the other slave to Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Take my advice to treat him well." Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) set him free. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked: "What did you do with him?" Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You commanded me to treat him well, so I set him free.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to Madinah, he had no servant with him. Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) took my hand and brought me to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: O Prophet of Allah! This is Anas, a sensible and intelligent boy; he will serve you. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) states: Then I served the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in Madinah from his arrival until his passing, in both travel and residence, but the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) never said to me regarding any task I did, "Why did you do this?" nor regarding any task I did not do, "Why did you not do this?"

Laqeet bin Sabirah narrates from his father, who said: I came to the Prophet ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) when he had given a shepherd a kid inside the enclosure. The Prophet ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) said: «لاَ تَحْسِبَنَّ» and did not say: «لاَ تَحْسَبَنَّ» (i.e., he did not pronounce it with a kasrah). Do not think that we have slaughtered a goat for you. We have a hundred goats and we do not want to have more than a hundred. When the shepherd brings a kid, we slaughter a goat in its place so that the number remains a hundred. Among what the Prophet ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) said was also: "Do not beat your wife as you beat your slave-girl, and when you rinse your nose, do so thoroughly except when you are fasting."

Abu Aliah says that we were instructed to seal anything before handing it over to the servants. Measure and count the item before handing it over so that their habits do not get spoiled and we do not become suspicious.

Yazid bin Abdullah bin Qasit reports that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) sent his slave to the market with gold or silver. The slave sold it in exchange but delayed in taking the exchange. When the slave returned, Abdullah bin Umar beat him very severely. He said: Go and bring back the capital that was mine, and do not bring anything in exchange for it. (That is, do not bring silver in exchange for gold, nor gold in exchange for silver.)

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) who says: I was beating my slave when I heard a voice from behind me,“O Abu Mas’ud! Know that Allah has more power over you than you have over him.”When I turned around, it was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I said,“O Messenger of Allah, I have freed him for the sake of Allah.”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Beware! If you had not done so, the Fire would have engulfed you or the Fire would have touched you.”
