It is narrated from Qais that Sayyiduna Amr bin Al-Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) was traveling with a group of his companions. They passed by a dead mule that had become bloated. He said: By Allah! If any one of you were to fill his stomach by eating this, it would be better for him than eating the flesh of his Muslim brother.

570/738 From ‘Ubada ibn al-Walid ibn al-Samit who said: I went out with my father while I was a young boy, and we met an old man I said:“O uncle, what prevented you from giving your boy this striped garment, and taking the cloak, so you would have two cloaks, and he would have the striped garment?”He turned to my father and said:“Is this your son?”He said:“Yes.”He then wiped my head and said:“May Allah bless you. I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, say: ‘Feed them from what you eat, and clothe them from what you wear.’ O son of my brother, the loss of worldly goods is more beloved to me than that he should take from the goods of the Hereafter.”I said:“O my father! Who is this man?”He said:“Abu al-Yusr [كعب] ibn ‘Amr.”

Muhammad bin Ziyad narrates that I witnessed the era of the Salaf (the Companions). These people used to live in the same house with their families. Often it would happen that a guest would come to someone, and another person’s pot would be on the fire. The one who had the guest would take that pot for his guest. The owner of the pot, not finding his pot, would ask,“Who has taken the pot?”The one with the guest would say,“We have taken it for the guest.”The owner of the pot would say,“May Allah bless you in it,”or would say something similar. Baqiyyah said: Muhammad used to say: The same would happen with bread baking. And there would only be wooden walls between the two households. Baqiyyah says: I also witnessed this, meaning I found Muhammad bin Ziyad and his companions in this state.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked his noble wives, and all of them replied that they had nothing except water. So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Who will take this guest, or who will host him?" One man from among the Ansar said, "I will." He took him to his wife and said to her, "Honor the guest of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)." She said, "We have nothing except the food for the children." He said, "Prepare the food, and adjust the lamp. Put the children to sleep when they ask for dinner." The wife prepared the food, adjusted the lamp, and put the children to sleep. Then she got up as if she was fixing the lamp, but she turned it off, and made the guest feel as if both of them (husband and wife) were eating as well, though they both spent the night hungry. In the morning, he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), upon seeing him, said: "Allah smiled at, or was pleased with, your action last night." Upon this, Allah revealed this verse: «ويؤثرون على أنفسهم ولو كان بهم خصاصة ومن يوق شح نفسه فأولئك هم المفلحون»

It is narrated from Abu Shurayh Adawi that he said: My two ears heard and my eyes saw when the Prophet (peace be upon him) was saying: Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honor his neighbor, and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honor his guest by giving him a gift. Someone asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by his gift? He said: "A day and a night. Recommended hospitality is for three days, and whatever is beyond that is charity for the guest. It is not permissible for him to stay with him to the extent that he puts him in difficulty. Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent."

Abu Karima Shami narrates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Hospitality for one night is obligatory upon every Muslim. Whoever spends the night in someone’s courtyard, it becomes a debt upon him; if he wishes, he may demand repayment of the debt, and if he wishes, he may forgo it."

Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), "O Messenger of Allah! You send us (for jihad), and we camp near a people, but they do not host us. What do you think about this?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to us: "If you camp near a people and an order is issued for you for what is due to a guest, then accept it. If they do not do so, then take from them the right of the guest which was permissible for them." (When you go to a people, I will tell you what a guest should do. Draw their attention. If they do not show hospitality, then take as much as is due to a guest.)

It is narrated from Sahl bin Sa’d that Abu Usaid Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him) invited the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to his wedding, and his wife herself was serving the people that day, and she was the bride. So she (the wife) said, or he (the husband) said: Do you know what I had soaked and prepared as nabidh for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)? I had soaked some dates in a plate overnight.
