Tawoos says that a man asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about the meaning of this verse: «﴿قُلْ لَا أَسْأَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ أَجْرًا إِلَّا الْمَوَدَّةَ فِي الْقُرْبَى﴾ [الشورى: 23] » Before he could answer, Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) spoke up and said that it refers to the close relatives of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, "You were hasty. In every clan of the Quraysh, the Prophet (peace be upon him) had kinship. This verse was revealed regarding this, that I do not ask you for any recompense for this message except that you maintain the ties of kinship between me and you, and at least consider this."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The surahs which you call "Mufassalat" are in fact "Muhkamat." At the time of the Prophet's (peace be upon him) passing, I was ten years old, and by that time I had recited all the Muhkamat, and my circumcision had also been done.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the polytheists used to part their hair, while the People of the Book would leave them as they were. And the blessed habit of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was that in matters where no command had come, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) preferred to follow and agree with the People of the Book rather than the polytheists. Therefore, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also did not part his hair, but later he (peace and blessings be upon him) started parting his hair.
