Benefits & Rulings:
➊ This narration comes through another chain which is authentic, and in that version it is only mentioned that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not respond to the person's greeting. [Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 370] Therefore, the latter part of Abu Dawood’s Hadith no. [17] , which mentions that the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed ablution afterward... this portion is not authentic. Thus, it is established correctly that one should not reply to a greeting while relieving oneself. However, it would not be correct to say that responding to Salam or mentioning Allah is impermissible without Wudhu.
➋ It is also understood from this that one should not greet a person who is sitting to relieve himself. [S.Y]
