Benefits & Rulings:
➊ It is understood from this that urinating while standing is permissible in cases of necessity, provided there is no risk of urine splashing. Based on this hadith, it is narrated from Hazrat Umar, Hazrat Ali, Ibn Umar, and Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with them all) that urinating while standing is allowed. However, the Sunnah is for a person to urinate while sitting, because it is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): “If anyone tells you that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to urinate while standing, do not believe him, because he (peace be upon him) always used to urinate while sitting.”
[Jami` at-Tirmidhi, Book of Purification, Chapter: What Has Been Related About The Prohibition of Urinating While Standing, Hadith: 12; Sunan an-Nasa’i, Book of Purification, Hadith: 29]
Imam Tirmidhi (may Allah have mercy on him) states that the most authentic narration on this issue is this one. Moreover, sitting while urinating provides more privacy and also protects a person more effectively from urine splashes.
Nowadays, modern people—who have gone to extremes in imitating the West—tend to urinate while standing in hotels and parks and even take pride in it. However, imitating non-Muslims in every matter is clearly against the teachings of the Prophet (peace be upon him). May Allah Almighty grant us the ability to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet and protect us from imitating the West and non-Muslims.
➋ It is also understood from this that under certain circumstances, it is permissible to urinate in the presence of others (if needed and without revealing one's private parts).
