Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "A virgin will be given seven days and a previously married woman will be given three days, then the man will divide (his time) equally among his wives."

Lady Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: She presented herself in the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and held onto the garment of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "You (peace and blessings be upon him) will stay with me today." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you wish, I will stay with you today, and then in exchange for this, I will deduct your day from the division (on another day)." Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A previously married woman will get three days, and a virgin will get seven days."

Abdul Malik bin Abu Bakr narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) married Lady Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) in the month of Shawwal, and her wedding took place in the month of Shawwal. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "If you wish, I will stay with you for seven days, and then stay seven days each with your fellow wives (co-wives), otherwise (the other option is) I will stay with you for three days, and then come to you on your appointed day." Lady Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! (For now) you (peace be upon you) stay with me for three days."

The same narration is also transmitted with another chain: Abdul Malik bin Abu Bakr, on the authority of his father, narrates the statement of Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her): When she was married, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "You are not of lesser status with your husband. If you wish, I will stay with you for three days, which will be exclusively for you (while the other wives will receive one day each according to their turn), and if you wish, I will stay with you for seven days, but then I will stay with each of my wives for seven days." So Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "You may stay with me for three days." Imam Malik and Ibn Abi Dhi'b have derived from this the ruling: with a virgin, one should stay for seven days, and with a previously married woman, for three days.

Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (The text of the hadith is after the next chain). Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) relates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "When a man marries a virgin and he already has wives, then the virgin will have seven days, and if he marries a previously married woman, then she will have two days."

Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: It often happened that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to visit all his wives; he would seat his wives with him, kiss them, and touch them, but he would not have intercourse or sexual relations with them. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would spend the night with the wife whose turn it was.

This narration is also transmitted with another chain, however, in it the words are: The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not have intercourse, he would only touch.

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "When you marry a free woman and your first wife is a slave woman, then you will give the free woman two days and the slave woman one day. However, if the first wife is a free woman, then it is not appropriate to marry a slave woman."

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "When the first wife is a slave woman and then he marries a free woman, in the division (of nights) the slave woman will have one third share and the free woman will have two thirds share."

Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set Lady Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) free and made her emancipation her dowry.
