It is narrated from Zadhan, he says: I said to Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them): Tell us about those vessels which the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade, since there is a difference between our language and yours, so explain it in our dialect. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: He forbade the use of hantam, which is called a pitcher; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the use of muzaffat, which is a vessel coated with tar; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the use of dubba’, which is made from a gourd; and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the use of naqir, which is a vessel made by hollowing out the trunk of a date-palm. I said: Then in what should we drink beverages? He said: From skins (waterskins). The words of the narrator Muhammad bin Ja’far are: And he commanded us to prepare nabidh in waterskins.

Qais bin Hubtar says: I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about white, green, and red pitchers. He said: The first to ask about this were the delegation of Abdul Qais who asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): We obtain flour or sattu, etc., so in which skins should we prepare nabidh? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not use a vessel carved from pumpkin, a vessel coated with tar, a vessel carved from date-palm trunk, or a pitcher for preparing drinks; rather, drink nabidh prepared in skins. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty has forbidden wine, gambling, and drum-beating, and every intoxicating thing is forbidden. Sufyan says: I asked Ali bin Badhimah, what is drum-beating? He said: Beating the dholak (drum).

Abu Hakam says: I also asked Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade drinking nabidh from a vessel made from gourd and from a pitcher. He says: Then I asked Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), he stated that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the use of vessels made from gourd and vessels coated with tar. And he says: My brother narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Saeed (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the use of pitchers, vessels made from gourd, and vessels coated with tar, and also forbade making nabidh by mixing unripe dates with ripe dates.

Syedna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade making nabidh (a type of drink) in vessels carved from tree trunks, vessels made from gourds, and vessels coated with tar. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Drink only from that vessel which has a strap tied on it. The people made water skins from camel hides and attached goat skins near the necks of the water skins. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed of this practice, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You may drink only from that water skin whose upper part is made of goat skin.
