A neighbor came to Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him), who wanted him to bear witness to his will, but Masruq saw that he had been extravagant and excessive. So Masruq said: "Allah has made the best distribution among you. Whoever prefers his own opinion over Allah's distribution has gone astray. Make a will for those among your relatives who are not heirs, and leave the rest to Allah's distribution." And he refused to bear witness.

Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "A man was making a will and began to bequeath things that were not appropriate, so indeed Allah has made the best division among you, and whoever leaves Allah's division and follows his own opinion goes astray. You should make a will for those who are not your heirs, then leave the wealth according to Allah's division."

Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Whoever gives preference to one of his children over another, Allah has made the best division among you. Whoever puts his own opinion before Allah's opinion will go astray. Make bequests for your non-heir relatives and leave the wealth to Allah's division."

Ata and Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on them) said: "Whoever makes a bequest of a share in his wealth, it is nothing, because he has not specified." And Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "His right in every case is one-sixth."

A person asked Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him): "What about someone who made a bequest for a share of wealth?" He replied: "The wealth will be divided, and whatever one share amounts to, that much will be given to the one for whom the bequest was made."

Ata and Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on them) said: "If a person makes a bequest for the Banu so-and-so, then men and women will all be equal, unless he says: «لِلذَّكَرِ مِثْلُ حَظِّ الْأُنْثَيَيْنِ» ."

Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "If a person makes a bequest of one third of his wealth for the Banu so-and-so, then it will be equal for all of them, men and women being equal."
