Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I went with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to the house of my maternal aunt Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), and with us was Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) as well. Lady Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) submitted to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! Should we not present to you that food which Umm ‘Afiq gave us as a gift? She brought some roasted lizard. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw it, he spat three times, but he did not eat it. He instructed us to eat it. Then a vessel was presented to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in which there was milk, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drank from it. I was on the right side of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting on the left side, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me:“Boy, the right to drink is yours, but if you wish, you may give preference to Khalid.”I said: I will not give preference to anyone regarding what remains from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“When Allah grants someone something to eat, he should say: ‘O Allah, bless it for us and grant us better than it in exchange.’ And when Allah grants someone milk to drink, he should say: ‘O Allah, bless it for us and increase it for us.’”(The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:) To my knowledge, there is nothing besides this (milk) that suffices for both food and drink (i.e., for hunger and thirst).

Shaibani narrates: I entered the mosque with Shu’mi, so he said: Is there any scholar you know of, with whom we can go and sit? Do you want to go to Abu Husayn? I replied: No. Then he looked around and his gaze fell upon Yazid bin Asam, so he said: Do you want to go and sit with him? Because Lady Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) is his maternal aunt. So we went and sat with him, and Yazid bin Asam said: In the presence of Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the lizard was mentioned, that“I do not eat it, nor do I declare it unlawful.”So Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) became angry and said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was only sent to declare lawful things as lawful and unlawful things as unlawful, and this (lizard) was eaten in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). (This means that it is lawful.)

Salim bin Abu Ja’d narrates: A man came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and asked him about a person who deliberately kills a believer, then repents, believes, does good deeds, and then attains guidance. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: How can he attain guidance? I heard your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say:“On the Day of Resurrection, the murdered person will be brought in such a state that he will be holding his killer, his veins will be flowing with blood, and he will bring him to the Throne and say: O my Lord! Ask him why he killed me?”Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: By Allah! This was revealed by Allah Almighty to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and since this verse was revealed, nothing has abrogated it.
