Chapter 176: Reports on the Prophet’s permission to forgo bathing after intercourse without ejaculation, some of which are abrogated
Hadith Number: 224
Hazrat Yazid bin Khalid Jahni (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that he asked Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) about a person who has intercourse but does not ejaculate semen (so what should he do?). He replied that it is not obligatory for him to perform ghusl. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said that he heard this ruling from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). (Yazid, may Allah have mercy on him) says that then he asked Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib, Sayyiduna Zubair bin Awwam, Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaidullah, and Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with them) about this issue, and they also gave the same answer. Hazrat Abu Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that 'Urwah bin Zubair (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated to him that he asked Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) about this issue, and he also reported the same answer from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).

Chapter 177: Abrogation of dropping the bath requirement after intercourse without ejaculation
Hadith Number: 225
Sayyiduna Sahl Ansari رضي الله عنه, who lived during the time of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and was fifteen years old in the blessed era of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, says that Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b رضي الله عنه narrated to me: The fatwa that the noble Companions رضي الله عنهم used to give was that "water is due to water"—ghusl becomes obligatory upon the emission of semen. In the beginning of Islam, the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم had granted concession regarding this, but later the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم ordered to perform ghusl. Imam Abu Bakr رحمه الله narrates from his teacher Ahmad bin Mani' رحمه الله, with his chain, from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b رضي الله عنه that he said: "Water is due to water." This fatwa was a concession in the beginning of Islam, then it was prohibited. The Imam mentions another chain as well.

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Ansar Companions used to give the fatwa that (the ritual) bath (ghusl) becomes obligatory due to (the emission of) water (semen). This was a concession in the early days of Islam, then we were commanded to perform ghusl. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that in his narration, Muhammad bin Ja’far has said: «اخبرني سهل بن سعد» “Sahl bin Sa’d narrated to me.”I have some doubt in my heart about this wording; I fear that this is a mistake of Muhammad bin Ja’far or of a narrator below him (i.e., Imam Zuhri does not narrate this directly from Sahl, but there is a teacher between them). Because Ibn Wahb narrated from Amr bin Harith, and he from Imam Zuhri, so he said: «اخبرني من ارضي عن سهل بن سعد عن ابي بن كعب» “My preferred teacher narrated to me from Sahl bin Sa’d, and he from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him).”The Imam says that this narration was related to me by Ahmad bin Abdur Rahman bin Wahb from his uncle, and he from Amr. And Amr bin Harith did not mention the name of the person in his chain (and referred to him as his preferred person); it is possible that he is Abu Hazim Salamah bin Dinar. Because Maisarah bin Isma’il narrated this hadith from Ghassan Muhammad bin Mutarrif, and he from Abu Hazim, and he from Sahl bin Sa’d, and he from Muslim bin Hajjaj. He says that Abu Ja’far Hammal narrated to us.

Chapter 178: Obligation to bathe after genital contact, even without ejaculation
Hadith Number: 227
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the (Companions) were sitting and they discussed the matter that makes ghusl (ritual bath) obligatory. Among those present, a Muhajir Companion said that when the circumcised part (private part) meets the circumcised part, then ghusl becomes obligatory. Among those present, an Ansari Companion said, "No, not until (semen) comes out forcefully with gush." (Upon hearing this discussion) Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I will bring you information about this." He went to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), greeted her with salam, and then said, "I want to ask you about something, but I feel shy about it." Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "Do not be shy to ask about something which you could ask your real mother who gave birth to you. Indeed, I am also your mother." He said, "I asked, 'What makes ghusl obligatory?'" She replied, "You have come to someone knowledgeable (aware and familiar with the issue). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'When a man sits between the four parts of a woman and the circumcised part meets the circumcised part, then ghusl becomes obligatory.'"

Chapter 179: Obligation of forming intention for bathing after major impurity
Hadith Number: Q228
And the explanation of the evidence contrary to the claim of those scholars who say that if a person in a state of major ritual impurity (junub) enters a river without the intention of bathing, and water touches his entire body, even though after the obligation of ghusl (ritual bath) he neither intended nor resolved to perform ghusl, nor was his purpose to seek closeness to Allah Almighty, or water was poured over him by force which he disliked and which touched his entire body, then the obligation of ghusl is lifted from him.

Imam Abu Bakr, may Allah have mercy on him, says that I have narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, from the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said: "Actions are based on intentions, and for every person is what he intended."

Chapter 180: Evidence that intercourse with multiple wives requires only one bath
Hadith Number: 229
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to have intercourse with his wives and perform ghusl (ritual bath) only once. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that this hadith is ghareeb (rare). In the well-known chain, Ma'mar narrates from Qatadah.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to spend the night with all his wives with a single bath. (The Imam says) Ribati (the narrator) narrated from Mu’ammar and said «يطوف» instead of «يطيف» (the meaning is the same).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to visit all his wives, during the night and day, with a single bath, and they were eleven in number. (Qatadah) says that I asked Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), "Did the Prophet (peace be upon him) have the strength for this?" He replied, "We used to talk among ourselves that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was given the strength of thirty men."

Chapter 181: Description of male and female fluids that require bathing if not due to intercourse
Hadith Number: 232
It is narrated from the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ), Sayyiduna Thawban (رضی اللہ عنہ), who says: I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) when a scholar from among the Jewish scholars came to him and said, "O Muhammad ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ), peace be upon you." So I pushed him so hard that he almost fell. He said, "Why did you push me?" I said, "Can you not say 'Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم )' instead of just mentioning his name?" The Jewish scholar said, "We call him by the name his family gave him." So the Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) said, "Indeed, my name is Muhammad ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ), which my family gave me." The Jew said, "I have come to ask you a question." The Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) said to him, "If I tell you something, will it benefit you?" He said, "I will listen with both my ears (meaning, I will listen to your statement with full attention)." Then the Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) began to poke the ground with a stick he had with him (as a thoughtful person does), then said, "Ask." The Jew said, "Where will the people be on the day when this earth and the heavens will be replaced with another earth and heavens?" The Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) said, "(They) will be in darkness near the Bridge (Sirat)." He said, "Who will be the first people to be permitted to cross the Bridge (Sirat)?" The Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) said, "The poor emigrants." He said, "What gift will they receive upon entering Paradise?" The Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) said, "A piece of fish liver." He asked, "What will be their food after that?" The Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) said, "For them, a bull of Paradise will be slaughtered, which used to graze around Paradise." He asked, "After this meal, what will they drink?" The Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) said, "They will drink from a spring in Paradise called Salsabeel." He said, "You have spoken the truth." And he said, "I have come to ask you about something which no one on earth knows except a prophet or one or two men." The Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) said, "If I tell you about that thing, will it benefit you?" He said, "I will listen with both my ears." He said, "I have come to ask you about the child." The Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) said, "The man's fluid is white and the woman's fluid is yellow. When both fluids meet, and the man's fluid prevails over the woman's fluid, then by the command of Allah, a boy is born. And when the woman's fluid prevails over the man's fluid, then by the command of Allah, a girl is born." The Jew said, "You have spoken the truth, and indeed you are a Prophet." Then he left. Then the Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) said, "Of all the things he asked me about, I did not know any of them until Allah, the Exalted, gave me knowledge of them."
