Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrated a hadith from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) similar to the previous hadith, except that it contains these words: If the moon is not sighted, then count thirty days.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Do not fast one or two days before the month of Ramadan, except if there is a day on which one of you habitually fasts, then he may fast on that day. Begin fasting upon sighting the moon and stop fasting upon sighting the moon. If the sky is cloudy, then complete thirty days before stopping the fast.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Do not fast one or two days before Ramadan, except for a person who habitually fasts on a particular day, then he may fast on that day.

Abdullah bin Abi Musa says: I asked Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) about fasting on a doubtful day in the month of Ramadan. She said: Fasting one day in Sha'ban is more beloved to me than abandoning one day of Ramadan. Hearing this, I left from there and asked the same question to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar and Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah. They said: The wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) know these matters better.

Abdur Rahman bin Zaid bin Khattab says: I delivered a sermon on a day about which there was doubt as to whether it was Sha'ban or Ramadan. I said: I have sat with the noble Companions and asked them questions; they informed me that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Begin fasting upon sighting the moon and stop fasting upon sighting the moon, and perform other acts of worship accordingly. If, for some reason, the moon is concealed, then complete thirty days, and if two Muslims bear witness to the sighting or non-sighting of the moon, then begin or stop fasting on that basis.

It is narrated from a companion that on the thirtieth day of Ramadan, people began the morning in a state of fasting. Meanwhile, two Bedouins arrived and testified that they had seen the moon the previous evening. On this basis, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered the people to break their fast at that very moment.

Abu Umair bin Anas says: My Ansari uncles, who were among the Companions, narrated to me that (on the 29th of Ramadan) they did not see the crescent of Shawwal, so the people fasted in the morning. Then, in the latter part of the day, a caravan arrived and they testified before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that they had seen the crescent the previous evening. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered the people to break their fast and to go out for Eid the next day.

Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila says: I was with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) when a man came to him and said that he had seen the crescent of Shawwal yesterday. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O people! Break your fast.

Kuraib says: Sayyida Umm Fadl (may Allah be pleased with her) sent me to Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Syria. While I was there, the new moon of Ramadan was sighted. We saw the moon on the night of Friday. I returned to Madinah at the end of that month. Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) asked me about some matters, and then the topic of the moon came up. He asked me: When did you see the moon? I said: We saw it on the night of Friday. He asked: Did you see it yourself? I said: Yes, and the people also saw it, and then everyone and Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) fasted. Upon hearing this, he said: But we saw it on Saturday evening, so we will continue to fast until we complete thirty days or see the moon. I said: Will you not consider the sighting and fasting of Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) as valid? He said: That is not the case; in fact, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to do it this way.
