Hadith Number: 8707
Narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: My uncle, Sayyiduna Anas bin Nadr (may Allah be pleased with him), was not present with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Badr. I was named Anas after this uncle. He was very grieved about this and used to say: "Badr was the first battle in which the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was present, and I could not be present. If Allah grants me the opportunity of another battle, He will see what I do." Then he became afraid to make any further claim. Then Sayyiduna Anas bin Nadr participated with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Uhud. Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Mu’adh (may Allah be pleased with him) was coming forward. Sayyiduna Anas bin Nadr said to him: "Abu Amr! Where are you going?" He replied: "Ah, I am smelling the fragrance of Paradise from the direction of Uhud." Then Sayyiduna Anas continued fighting until he was martyred. His body had more than eighty (80) wounds from swords, spears, and arrows. Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says: His sister, that is, my paternal aunt, Rubayyi’ bint Nadr (may Allah be pleased with her), recognized her brother by his fingertips, that this was her brother. Then this verse was revealed: {رِجَالٌ صَدَقُوْا مَا عَاہَدُوا اللّٰہَ عَلَیْہِ فَمِنْہُمْ مَنْ قَضٰی نَحْبَہُ وَمِنْہُمْ مَنْ یَنْتَظِرُ وَمَا بَدَّلُوْا تَبْدِیلًا} … "Among the believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allah; some of them have fulfilled their vow, and some of them are still waiting, but they have never changed in the least." The Companions believed that this verse was revealed about Sayyiduna Anas bin Nadr (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companions (such as Sayyiduna Hamza, may Allah be pleased with him).

Narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both): Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and sought permission to enter. People were sitting at the door of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was not granted permission. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came and sought permission, but he too was not granted permission. Then both Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) were granted permission, and they both entered. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting, and around him were his wives. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was silent. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will certainly say something that will make the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) smile." Then he said: "O Messenger of Allah! If only you had seen, when my wife bint Zayd (may Allah be pleased with her) demanded expenses from me, I struck her on the neck with my fist." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed so much that his molar teeth became visible. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These are my wives, as you see, gathered around me to ask for expenses." Hearing this, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up to strike Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up to strike Sayyida Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her), and both of them said to them: "Are you demanding from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) something which he does not possess?" The wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah! After today, we will not demand from you what is not within your means." Then Allah Almighty revealed those verses in which the option was given. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) first said to Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): "I am about to say something to you; do not be hasty in replying without consulting your parents." She said: "What is it?" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the verse of option: {Yā ayyuhā al-nabiyyu qul li-azwājika ... ... .} Hearing this, Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Should I consult my parents about you? I choose Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and I request you not to mention my choice to any of your other wives." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty has not sent me to cause hardship, but has sent me as one who brings ease and teaches. If any of my wives asks about the option, I will certainly explain it to her in detail."

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was commanded to give his wives the choice, he (peace and blessings be upon him) first said to me: O Aisha! I am going to present a matter to you, do not be hasty in answering it without consulting your parents. Although he (peace and blessings be upon him) knew that my parents would not command me to separate from him (peace and blessings be upon him), then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah the Exalted has said: {یٰٓاَیُّہَا النَّبِیُّ قُلْ لِّاَزْوَاجِکَ اِنْ کُنْتُنَّ تُرِدْنَ الْحَیٰوۃَ الدُّنْیَا وَزِیْنَتَہَا فَتَعَالَیْنَ اُمَتِّعْکُنَّ وَاُسَرِّحْکُنَّ سَرَاحًا جَمِیْلًا۔ وَاِنْ کُنْتُنَّ تُرِدْنَ اللّٰہَ وَرَسُوْلَہ وَالدَّارَ الْاٰخِرَۃَ فَاِنَّ اللّٰہَ اَعَدَّ لِلْمُحْسِنٰتِ مِنْکُنَّ اَجْرًا عَظِیْمًا۔} … O Prophet! Say to your wives: If you desire the life of this world and its adornment, then come, I will provide for you and release you in a gracious manner. But if you desire Allah and His Messenger and the home of the Hereafter, then surely Allah has prepared a great reward for those of you who do good. I said: Should I consult my parents about this? I have chosen Allah, His Messenger, and the home of the Hereafter. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was pleased with this.

It is narrated from Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was present in my house, when Sayyida Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) came carrying a pot in which there was khazira (a dish made from minced meat and flour). When she entered upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), he said: Call your husband and your two sons and bring them here. In the meantime, Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyiduna Hasan, and Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and they all began to eat the khazira. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was in a place resembling a small room, which was his sleeping place, and a sheet made in Khaybar was spread underneath. Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I was praying in the chamber, and at that time Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: {إِنَّمَا یُرِیدُ اللّٰہُ لِیُذْہِبَ عَنْکُمُ الرِّجْسَ أَ ہْلَ الْبَیْتِ وَیُطَہِّرَکُمْ تَطْہِیرًا} Allah only intends to remove impurity from you, O People of the House, and to purify you completely. After this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) took a part of the extra sheet and covered them, then raised his hand towards the sky and said: O my Allah! These are my family and my special ones, so remove impurity from them and purify them. O my Allah! These are my family and my special ones, so remove impurity from them and purify them. Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) says that I put my head inside that sheet and said: O Messenger of Allah! Am I also included with you? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Indeed, you are upon goodness, without doubt you are upon goodness.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was forbidden from marrying certain types of women; he could only marry believing women who had migrated. Then the command came: { لَا یَحِلُّ لَکَ النِّسَائُ مِنْ بَعْدُ وَلَا أَ نْ تَبَدَّلَ بِہِنَّ مِنْ أَ زْوَاجٍ وَلَوْ أَ عْجَبَکَ حُسْنُہُنَّ إِلَّا مَا مَلَکَتْ یَمِینُکَ} … After this, women are not lawful for you, nor is it for you to exchange them for other wives, even if their beauty pleases you, except those whom your right hand possesses. Thus, Allah made believing slave women lawful and also made lawful that believing woman who offers herself to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And Allah made every woman of a religion other than Islam unlawful for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: {یٰٓاَیُّہَا النَّبِیُّ اِنَّآ اَحْلَلْنَا لَکَ اَزْوَاجَکَ الّٰتِیْٓ اٰتَیْتَ اُجُوْرَہُنَّ وَمَا مَلَکَتْ یَمِیْنُکَ مِمَّآ اَفَائَ اللّٰہُ عَلَیْکَ وَبَنٰتِ عَمِّکَ وَبَنٰتِ عَمّٰتِکَ وَبَنٰتِ خَالِکَ وَبَنٰتِ خٰلٰتِکَ الّٰتِیْ ہَاجَرْنَ مَعَکَ ْ وَامْرَاَۃً مُّؤْمِنَۃً اِنْ وَّہَبَتْ نَفْسَہَا لِلنَّبِیِّ اِنْ اَرَادَ النَّبِیُّ اَنْ یَّسْتَنْکِحَہَا ٓ خَالِصَۃً لَّکَ مِنْ دُوْنِ الْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ} … O Prophet! Indeed, We have made lawful to you your wives to whom you have given their dowries and those whom your right hand possesses from what Allah has returned to you as spoils, and the daughters of your paternal uncles and the daughters of your paternal aunts and the daughters of your maternal uncles and the daughters of your maternal aunts who migrated with you, and any believing woman if she offers herself to the Prophet, if the Prophet wishes to marry her. This is exclusively for you, not for the believers. Indeed, We know what We have enjoined upon them concerning their wives and those whom their right hands possess, so that there will be no difficulty upon you. And Allah is ever Forgiving, Most Merciful.

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she used to criticize those women who would offer themselves as a gift to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyida would say: Does a woman not feel ashamed to offer herself as a gift without a dowry? Upon this, Allah Almighty revealed this verse: {تُرْجِیْ مَنْ تَشَاء ُ مِنْہُنَّ وَ تُؤْوِیْٓ اِلَیْکَ مَنْ تَشَائُ وَمَنِ ابْتَغَیْتَ مِمَّنْ عَزَلْتَ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَیْکَ ذٰلِکَ اَدْنٰٓی اَنْ تَقَرَّ اَعْیُنُہُنَّ وَلَا یَحْزَنَّ وَیَرْضَیْنَ بِمَآ اٰتَیْتَہُنَّ کُلُّہُنَّ وَاللّٰہُ یَعْلَمُ مَا فِیْ قُلُوْبِکُمْ وَکَانَ اللّٰہُ عَلِیْمًا حَلِیْمًا۔} … Of them, you may defer whom you will, and you may take to yourself whom you will, and whomsoever you desire of those whom you had set aside, there is no blame upon you. That is more likely that their eyes will be cooled and they will not grieve, and that they will all be satisfied with what you give them. And Allah knows what is in your hearts, and Allah is All-Knowing, Most Forbearing. Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I said, O Prophet of Allah! It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that even after the revelation of this verse, when it was the turn of any wife, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would seek her permission: {تُرْجِیْ مَنْ تَشَاء ُ مِنْہُنَّ وَ تُؤْوِیْٓ اِلَیْکَ مَنْ تَشَائُ وَمَنِ ابْتَغَیْتَ مِمَّنْ عَزَلْتَ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَیْکَ} … "You may put off whom you please of them, and you may take to yourself whom you please, and whomsoever you desire of those whom you had set aside, there is no blame on you." I (Mu’adhah) said: Aisha! When the Prophet (peace be upon him) would ask you, what would you say? She said: I would say: O Messenger of Allah! If this matter is up to me, then I would not give preference to anyone over you.
