Narrated from Sayyiduna Zubair bin Al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him): When these verses of Surah Az-Zumar were revealed: {إِنَّکَ مَیِّتٌ وَإِنَّہُمْ مَیِّتُونَ ثُمَّ إِنَّکُمْ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَۃِ عِنْدَ رَبِّکُمْ تَخْتَصِمُونَ} … (O Prophet) Indeed, you will die and they too will die, then on the Day of Resurrection you will dispute before your Lord. Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Along with sins, will what happens between us in this world also be repeated? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, it will certainly be repeated for you, until every rightful person is given his due. Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! Then the matter is indeed very severe.

It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Zubair bin Al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) that when this verse was revealed: {ثُمَّ إِنَّکُمْ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَۃِ عِنْدَ رَبِّکُمْ تَخْتَصِمُونَ} … (Then on the Day of Resurrection you will dispute before your Lord.) I (Zubair, may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Will these disputes that occur between us in this world also happen in the Hereafter? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes. And when this verse was revealed: {ثُمَّ لَتُسْأَ لُنَّ یَوْمَئِذٍ عَنْ النَّعِیمِ} … Then on that Day you will surely be questioned about the blessings. I (Zubair, may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! About which blessings will we be questioned? We only have these two black things, one is dates and the other is water. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Beware! Soon you will be questioned about this.

Mawla of the Messenger, Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I do not wish that I be given the world and whatever is in it in exchange for this verse: {یَا عِبَادِیَ الَّذِینَ أَ سْرَفُوْا عَلٰی أَنْفُسِہِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوْا مِنْ رَحْمَۃِ اللّٰہِ إِنَّ اللّٰہَ یَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِیعًا إِنَّہُ ہُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِیمُ} … O My servants who have transgressed against their own souls, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Surely, He is the Most Forgiving, Most Merciful. A man said: O Messenger of Allah! And (what about) the one who committed shirk (associating partners with Allah)? The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent and then said: Except for the one who committed shirk (he will not be forgiven). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated this sentence three times.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a Jew passed by the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was sitting. The Jew said: "O Abu al-Qasim! What do you say about this: when Allah, the Exalted, will lift the sky upon this index finger, and the earth upon this finger, and the water upon this finger, and the mountains upon this finger, and all the rest of creation upon this finger?" Along with this, the Jew pointed towards his fingers. Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed this verse: {وَمَا قَدَرُوا اللّٰہَ حَقَّ قَدْرِہِ} … And they did not appraise Allah with true appraisal as is due to Him.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man from the People of the Book came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said:“O Abu al-Qasim! Has it reached you that Allah, the Exalted, will carry the creations on one finger, the heavens on one finger, the earths on one finger, the trees on one finger, and the moist soil on one finger?”The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed so much at his words that his blessed molar teeth became visible. Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed this verse: {وَمَا قَدَرُوا اللّٰہَ حَقَّ قَدْرِہِ} … And they did not appraise Allah with true appraisal as is due to Him.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) one day recited this verse on the pulpit: {وَمَا قَدَرُوْا اللّٰہَ حَقَّ قَدْرِہِ وَالْأَ رْضُ جَمِیعًا قَبْضَتُہُ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَۃِ وَالسَّمٰوَاتُ مَطْوِیَّاتٌ بِیَمِینِہِ سُبْحَانَہُ وَتَعَالٰی عَمَّا یُشْرِکُونَ} … "And they did not appraise Allah with true appraisal as is His due, while the whole earth will be in His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be rolled up in His right hand. Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him." At the same time, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began moving his hand forward and backward and said: "The Lord is declaring His own greatness: I am the Compeller, I am the Supreme, I am the King, I am the Dominant, I am the Generous." While he was saying this, the pulpit trembled so much that we feared he might fall from the pulpit.

Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him): I was hiding behind the curtain of the Ka’bah when three men came. One was a Qurayshi and the other two were his brothers-in-law from Banu Thaqif, or one was a Thaqafi and the other two were his Qurayshi brothers-in-law. Their bellies were covered with much fat, but their hearts lacked understanding. They discussed various things; I could not hear all of it. Anyway, one of them said: What do you think, does Allah Almighty hear what we are saying? The second said: I think that when we speak loudly, He hears us, and when we do not speak loudly, He does not hear us. The third spoke and said: If He hears some part of what we say, then that means He hears all of it. When I mentioned these things to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Allah Almighty revealed these verses: {وَمَا کُنْتُمْ تَسْتَتِرُونَ أَنْ یَشْہَدَ عَلَیْکُمْ … … فَأَصْبَحْتُمْ مِنْ الْخَاسِرِینَ}

Tawoos says that a man asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about the meaning of this verse: {قُلْ لَا أَسْأَلُکُمْ عَلَیْہِ أَ جْرًا إِلَّا الْمَوَدَّۃَ فِی الْقُرْبٰی} … Say, "I do not ask you for any reward except love for kinship." Saeed bin Jubair said: Here, the kinship of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is meant, but Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: O Saeed! You have acted hastily. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had kinship with every small and large tribe of Quraysh. This verse was revealed about them: {قُلْ لَا أَ سْأَ لُکُمْ عَلَیْہِ أَ جْرًا إِلَّا الْمَوَدَّۃَ فِی الْقُرْبٰی} … I do not ask you for any reward for conveying (the message), but I do ask that you maintain the ties of kinship between me and you.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: Shall I not tell you the most excellent verse of the Holy Qur’an, which the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained to us? Whatever misfortune befalls you is because of what your own hands have earned, and He pardons much. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Ali! I will explain its interpretation for you: {مَا أَ صَابَکُمْ} Whatever befalls you, that is, illness or punishment or any worldly trial, {فَبِمَا کَسَبَتْ أَ یْدِیکُمْ} (then that is the recompense for what your own hands have earned) and Allah, the Exalted, is too gracious to punish you again in the Hereafter, and whatever Allah pardons in this world, He is far more forbearing than to seize you again after pardoning.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, he says: There is a verse of the Holy Qur’an, I know it, but no one has ever asked me about it. Now I do not know whether people know about it, so they do not ask, or they have not understood it enough to ask about it. Then he continued talking to us about other things, and when he stood up and left, we began to blame each other that we did not ask him about that verse. I (Abu Yahya) said: When he comes tomorrow, I will ask him. So when he came the next day, I said: O Ibn Abbas! Yesterday you mentioned a verse about which no one has asked you; now, is it that people have come to know about it, so they do not ask, or have they not understood it? He said: Yes, I will tell you. The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to the Quraysh: O assembly of Quraysh! There is no good in anyone who is worshipped besides Allah Almighty. Now the Quraysh knew that the Christians worshipped Isa ibn Maryam, peace be upon him, and they also knew what the Christians said about Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, that is, they denied his prophethood. So the people of Quraysh said: O Muhammad! Do you not claim that Sayyiduna Isa, peace be upon him, was a prophet and a righteous servant of Allah Almighty? Then, if you are truthful in this matter, their deity is just as you say (so there is no good left in Isa, peace be upon him)? So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: {وَلَمَّا ضُرِبَ ابْنُ مَرْیَمَ مَثَلًا إِذَا قَوْمُکَ مِنْہُ یَصِدُّونَ} … When the son of Mary is cited as an example, your people turn away from it. The narrator said: What does "yasiddoon" mean? He said: Making noise, while Allah Almighty says: {وَإِنَّہُ لَعِلْمٌ لِلسَّاعَۃِ} although the coming of Isa, peace be upon him, is one of the signs before the Day of Judgment.
