Sayyiduna Abu Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty says: {ثُمَّ أَ وْرَثْنَا الْکِتَابَ الَّذِینَ اصْطَفَیْنَا مِنْ عِبَادِنَا فَمِنْہُمْ ظَالِمٌ لِنَفْسِہِ وَمِنْہُمْ مُقْتَصِدٌ وَمِنْہُمْ سَابِقٌ بِالْخَیْرَاتِ بِإِذْنِ اللّٰہِ} … Then We made those whom We chose from among Our servants inherit the Book; but of them are some who wrong themselves, and of them are some who are moderate, and of them are some who, by Allah’s leave, are foremost in good deeds. That is the great bounty. Its explanation is that those who are foremost in good deeds will enter Paradise without reckoning, those who are moderate will have an easy reckoning, and those who wronged themselves will be detained in the Plain of Gathering, then Allah Almighty will compensate them with His mercy. These are the ones who will say: {اَلْحمْدُ لِلّٰہِ الَّذِیْٓ اَذْہَبَ عَنَّا الْحَزَنَ اِنَّ رَبَّنَا لَغَفُوْرٌ شَکُوْرٌ۔ الَّذِیْٓ اَحَلَّنَا دَارَ الْمُقَامَۃِ مِنْ فَضْلِہٖ لَایَمَسُّنَا فِیْہَا نَصَبٌ وَّلَا یَمَسُّنَافِیْہَا لُغُوْبٌ۔} … And they will say,“All praise is due to Allah, who has removed from us [all] sorrow. Indeed, our Lord is certainly Most Forgiving, Most Appreciative. He who has settled us in the home of permanence out of His bounty; no fatigue will touch us therein, nor will weariness touch us therein.”

It is narrated from Abu Thabit that a man entered the mosque of Damascus and made this supplication: O my Allah! Change my loneliness into intimacy, make my poverty a source of mercy, and grant me a beloved and righteous companion. Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) heard these words of his and said: If you are truthful, then I am more fortunate for your supplication. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: By {فَمِنْہُمْ ظَالِمٌ لِنَفْسِہِ} is meant the oppressor, who will be seized in the field of resurrection and will be afflicted with grief and distress; by {وَمِنْہُمْ مُقْتَصِدٌ} is meant the person whose reckoning will be easy; and {وَمِنْہُمْ سَابِقٌ بِالْخَیْرَاتِ} are those who will enter Paradise without reckoning.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding this verse: {ثُمَّ أَ وْرَثْنَا الْکِتَابَ الَّذِینَ اصْطَفَیْنَا مِنْ عِبَادِنَا فَمِنْہُمْ ظَالِمٌ لِنَفْسِہِ وَمِنْہُمْ مُقْتَصِدٌ وَمِنْہُمْ سَابِقٌ بِالْخَیْرَاتِ بِإِذْنِ اللّٰہِ} … Then We made those whom We chose from among Our servants the inheritors of the Book; then among them is he who wrongs himself, and among them is he who is moderate, and among them is he who, by Allah’s permission, is foremost in good deeds. That is the great bounty. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said that (regarding those mentioned in this verse) the rank of all these people is the same and all will enter Paradise.

Safwan narrates: Some elders told me that they were present with Ghudayf bin Harith Thamali, and he was experiencing great hardship at the time of death. So he said: Is there anyone among you who can recite Surah Yasin? Salih bin Shurayh Sakuti recited Surah Yasin, and he had only recited forty verses when he (Ghudayf) passed away. The elders used to say that when this Surah is recited over the deceased, it brings ease to him because of it.

Narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I was in the mosque with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time of sunset. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu Dharr! Do you know where this (sun) goes? I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It continues to move until it prostrates before its Lord and seeks permission to return. Then it will be granted permission and it will be said: Return to where you came from. So it will return to its place of rising; that is its place of settling. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: {وَالشَّمْسُ تَجْرِی لِمُسْتَقَرٍّ لَہَا} … And the sun runs on its fixed course for a term (appointed).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When Jibreel (peace be upon him) took Ibrahim (peace be upon him) to Jamrah Aqabah, Satan appeared before him, so he pelted him with seven pebbles, and he sank into the earth. Then when they came to the middle Jamrah, Satan appeared again, so he pelted him with seven pebbles, and he sank into the earth. Then when they reached the farthest Jamrah, Satan appeared again, so he pelted him with seven pebbles, and he sank into the earth. Then when Ibrahim (peace be upon him) intended to sacrifice his son Ishaq (peace be upon him), he said to his father: O my dear father! Tie me well, lest I become restless and my blood splashes upon you. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) tied him, and when he took the knife to sacrifice him, a voice called out: {أَنْ یَّا إِبْرَاہِیمُ قَدْ صَدَّقْتَ الرُّؤْیَا} … O Ibrahim! You have fulfilled the vision.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, that Abu Talib fell ill. The Quraysh came to him, and the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, also came to visit him. There was space for a man to sit by his head, but Abu Jahl stood up and sat in that place. Then the Quraysh said: "Abu Talib! Your nephew speaks ill of our gods." Abu Talib addressed the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: "What is the matter? Your people are complaining about you." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "O my uncle! I want to unite them upon a single word, by accepting which the Arabs will submit to them and the non-Arabs will pay them jizya." Abu Talib said: "What is that word?" The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah)." They all stood up and began to say: "Has he made all the gods into one God?" At that time, these verses of Surah Sad were revealed: {صٓ وَالْقُرْآنِ ذِی الذِّکْر … … إِنَّ ہٰذَا لَشَیْئٌ عُجَابٌ}

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when Abu Talib fell ill, a group of the Quraysh came to visit him, among whom was Abu Jahl. They said: "Abu Talib! Your nephew insults our gods, he says this, he says that, and he does such and such." Abu Talib sent a message to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to come to him. There was an empty place near Abu Talib for one person; Abu Jahl feared that if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered, he would sit close by, and then perhaps Abu Talib would feel compassion for his nephew, so he quickly sat in that empty place. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered and found no place to sit, he sat near the door. Abu Talib said: "O nephew! Your people are complaining about you, that you speak ill of their gods, you say this and that, and you do such and such?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O my uncle! I want from them one word, by which the Arabs will submit to them and the non-Arabs will pay them jizya." They said: "What is that word? By your father! We will accept this and ten more like it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah)." Hearing this, they stood up shaking the dust from their clothes and said (as Allah Almighty said:) {اَجَعَلَ الْآلِھَۃَ اِلٰہًا وَاحِدًا اِنَّ ھٰذَا لَشَیْئٌ عُجَابٌ} ... "Has he made all the gods into one God? Indeed, this is a strange thing." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued reciting until he reached {لَمَّا یَذُوْقُوْا عَذَابِ}.
