It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he states: On the day of Hunayn, I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). People began to turn their backs and flee, leaving the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) alone in the field. Only eighty Muhajirin and Ansar remained with him. We had retreated about eighty steps on our feet, but we had not turned our backs to the disbelievers. Upon these people, Allah Almighty sent tranquility, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to advance, mounted on his mule. His mule shied, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was slightly lifted from its saddle. I said to him: Remain steady, may Allah raise you even higher. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Hand me a handful of dust. He threw that dust towards the faces of the disbelievers, and their eyes were filled with dust. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Where are the Muhajirin and Ansar? I replied: They are over there. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Call them loudly. I called them loudly, and they all came, their swords in their hands. It seemed as if they were flames of fire. After that, the polytheists turned their backs and fled.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that we conquered Makkah Mukarramah, then we marched towards Hunayn. On that occasion, the polytheists came with such excellent formation that neither I nor you have ever seen a better formation than that. First, there was a row of horsemen, then a row of foot soldiers, behind them a row of women, behind them a row of goats, and behind them a row of camels. We were also in great numbers, reaching six thousand, and the commanders of our cavalry units on both flanks of the army were Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him). Our horses began to seek refuge among our riding camels. After a short while, our horses bolted, and the villagers and those whom we recognized all began to flee. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called out: O Muhajirun! O Muhajirun! Then he called the Ansar and said: O Ansar! O Ansar! Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that this hadith is among those hadiths which my uncle narrated to me, (and Qadi Iyad has written that Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) stated that this hadith is among those which many people have narrated to me.) He says that upon the call of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we all responded: O Messenger of Allah! We are present. Then the Messenger of Allah advanced. By Allah! As soon as we reached them, Allah Almighty defeated those enemies. We seized all their wealth, then we set out towards Ta’if. We besieged them for forty days, after which we returned to Makkah Mukarramah. When we arrived, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began giving each man one hundred (camels). The Ansar began to say among themselves that those who fought against the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he is giving to them, and those who never fought against him, he is not giving to them! For various reasons regarding the hadith of ‘Ammiyyah, see Sharh al-Nawawi. (Abdullah Rafiq)

When this matter reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he called the leaders of the Muhajirun and Ansar to him and said: Let no one come to me except the Ansar. We entered the tent, and the tent was filled. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O group of Ansar! What is this matter that has reached me? They said: O Messenger of Allah! What matter has reached you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Are you not pleased that people go away with wealth, and you return to your homes with the Messenger of Allah? They all said: O Messenger of Allah! We are pleased. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then remain pleased with this.

It is narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Jabir, who reports from his father, Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), who says: When we reached the valley of Hunayn, we passed through a valley of Tihamah which was quite wide and broad, sloping from high ground to low. We were descending from above to below in it; it was the time of early dawn. The enemy was hiding in various places and narrow spots in the passes of the valley’s mountains, gathered and fully prepared to confront us. By Allah! As we were descending into the valley, their troops suddenly attacked us. Our people, startled by this sudden assault, fled in defeat. No one was looking towards anyone else. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also turned to the right side of the path. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“O people! Come to me, come to me! I am the Messenger of Allah, I am Muhammad bin Abdullah.”For a moment, no one responded. The camels, enraged, were running over each other, and people were moving along. Only a few Muhajirun, Ansar, and some members of the Ahl al-Bayt remained with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Among those who stayed with you were Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), and from the Ahl al-Bayt: Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him), his son Sayyiduna Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan bin Harith (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Rabi’ah bin Harith (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyidah Umm Ayman’s (may Allah be pleased with her) son Sayyiduna Ayman bin Ubaid, and Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him). A man from Banu Hawazin, who was riding a red camel and waving a black flag on the tip of a long spear, was at the front of his tribe, and the rest of Banu Hawazin were following him. Whenever he encountered a Muslim on the way, he would strike him with his spear, and when people passed by, he would raise his flag to guide those behind him, and the people would follow him.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: The standard-bearer of Hawazin was riding his camel and carrying out such actions when Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and an Ansari man went towards him. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went behind him and struck the camel’s hamstrings. The camel fell backward, and the Ansari quickly ran and struck, cutting off his foot from the middle of the shin, and the sound of the bone breaking was also heard. Thus, he fell down from his camel and the Muslims displayed courage and bravery. By Allah! When these defeated Muslims returned, they found the enemy prisoners with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in such a state that their hands were tied.

It is narrated from Abu Ishaq, he says: I heard Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him), when a man from Banu Qais asked him, "Did you people flee and leave the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time of the Battle of Hunayn?" He replied, "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not flee; in fact, Banu Hawazin were expert archers. When we attacked them, they scattered. We began collecting the spoils of war, and they confronted us with arrows. I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) riding his white mule, and Abu Sufyan bin Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) was holding its reins, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was reciting this rajaz: 'I am the Prophet, there is no lie; I am the son of Abdul Muttalib.'"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: We attacked Banu Hawazin and Ghatafan along with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). We were engaged in battle when a man came riding on his red camel. He took something out from a pouch tied to the camel and tied it to the camel, then he walked over and sat with us to eat. He looked at the people and saw that they were very few, and most of them were on foot. When he saw this situation, he ran away, reached his camel, mounted it, and spurred it on. In fact, he was a spy of the disbelievers. One of us from Banu Aslam mounted his white she-camel and chased after him. Sayyiduna Salamah says: I also ran after him on foot. The head of the Muslim’s she-camel was touching the rear of the disbeliever’s camel (i.e., both were very close). I advanced and reached behind the camel. Then I went ahead of the camel and grabbed its reins, and I made a specific sound to make the camel sit. When the camel placed its knees on the ground, I swung my sword and struck his head, severing it. Then I brought his camel, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) met me along with the people. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Who killed this man? The people informed that Sayyiduna Ibn Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) did. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: All the spoils taken from him belong to him.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of Hunayn, Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I struck the neck of a disbeliever and killed him. He was wearing a coat of mail, but I could not remove it. Please see who has taken off that coat of mail (as it was my right). A man said: The coat of mail is with me, but O Messenger of Allah! Please make him (Abu Qatadah) content regarding this coat of mail and let it remain with me. The blessed habit of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was that when something was asked from him, he would give it or remain silent. Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent, but Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! This will not happen that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) takes this coat of mail from one of Allah’s lions and gives it to you. Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled and said: Umar has spoken the truth. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: On that day, Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) had a dagger in her hand. Her husband, Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him), asked: What is this with you? She replied that I have kept it with me so that if any polytheist comes near me, I will rip open his belly with it. Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Are you hearing what Umm Sulaym is saying? At that moment, Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Messenger of Allah! Kill those freed captives who stayed behind and were defeated with you. But the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Umm Sulaym! Allah Almighty has helped us, and what a wonderful help it was.

He set out after them, and I was with him. Sayyiduna Abu Amir's horse swiftly carried him ahead, and he caught up with Ibn Duraid bin. Ibn Duraid killed Abu Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) and seized his flag. I pursued Ibn Duraid, killed him, and took the flag back into my possession, and I returned with the people.
