Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: "Jabir, do you have a wife?" I said: Yes. He (peace be upon him) asked: "Did you marry a widow or a virgin?" I replied: A widow. He (peace be upon him) said: "Why did you not marry a young girl?" I said: My father was martyred with you in such-and-such battle, and he left behind daughters. (Since I am their guardian,) I disliked marrying a girl like them. I married a widow so that she could remove lice from (my sisters) and sew their torn, old clothes. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "You have thought very well."

Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I said, "O Messenger of Allah! If you were to descend in a valley where one tree has already been grazed upon and another tree is untouched, on which tree would you let your camel graze?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the one which has not been used as fodder." The meaning of this hadith is that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not marry any virgin woman except Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would stick out his tongue for Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them). When the child saw the redness of the tongue, he would become happy.

Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: We asked Sayyidah Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her): Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)? She said: Yes, may my father be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Whenever she narrated a hadith, she used to say: May my father be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying:“Bring out the young women and the women who observe seclusion (in their houses), so that they may attend the Eid and join the supplications of the Muslims, and the menstruating women should keep away from the place of prayer of the Muslims.”

It is narrated from the sister of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawahah Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:“It is obligatory for every woman who ties a waistband, that is, who is of age, to go out (for the two Eids).”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to command his daughters and wives to go out for the two Eids.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man who does not own a woman cannot divorce her. A man who does not own a slave cannot sell him."

Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) divorced Hafsa, then took her back.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The greatest sins (i.e., the greatest sinners) are: (1) The man who marries a woman, fulfills his need with her, then divorces her and usurps her dowry. (2) The man who employs someone for work and consumes his wages himself. And (3) the man who kills an animal without benefit."

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when Sayyiduna Hafs bin Mughira (may Allah be pleased with him) divorced his wife Fatimah, she came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and explained the whole matter. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to her husband: "Send her off with some wealth or something (as a gift)." He said: "I do not have anything to give her." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "It is necessary to benefit her with something (by giving her some wealth)." Then he said: "So send her off with some wealth, even if it is half a sa’ of dates."
