One who entered Ihram like the Prophet in his time
Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to my people in Yemen. When I returned, I found that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in Batha. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me, "With what intention did you enter into Ihram?" I replied, "I entered into Ihram in the same way as the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "Do you have a sacrificial animal with you?" I replied, "No." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to perform Tawaf of the Ka'bah. Accordingly, I performed Tawaf of the Ka'bah and (Sa'i) between Safa and Marwah. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to come out of Ihram, so I came out of Ihram. Then I went to a woman from my people and she combed my hair or washed my head. Later, when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became the Caliph (and I narrated this hadith to him), he said, "We do not know what kind of hadith this is. If we act upon the Book of Allah, it commands us to complete Hajj and Umrah, as Allah the Exalted has said (Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 196): 'And complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah.' And if we act upon the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not come out of Ihram until he had offered the sacrifice."

Allah's command (Surah Baqarah): Hajj is in certain months
The hadith of Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) regarding Hajj has already been mentioned (see the Book: Statement of Menstruation... Chapter: Concerning the Issues of Menstruation When a Woman is Menstruating...). And here in this narration, she says that we set out (from Madinah) in the months of Hajj, during the nights of Hajj, in the state of Ihram for Hajj. Then we stopped at (the place) Sarif. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to his companions and said:“Whoever among you does not have a sacrificial animal with him and wishes to perform Umrah with this Ihram, let him do so. And whoever has a sacrificial animal with him, let him not do so.”Umm al-Mu’minin says, so some of the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) acted upon this command and some did not. She further says that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and some of his companions had the means and ability, and those who had sacrificial animals with them were not able to perform Umrah (i.e., they could not exit Ihram after Umrah), and then she narrated the rest of the hadith.

Tamattu', Qiran, and Ifrad Hajj; permission to change Hajj to Umrah if no sacrifice
Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that we set out from Madinah with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and we had only the intention of Hajj (i.e., we had put on the Ihram for Hajj). Then, when we reached Makkah and had performed the Tawaf of the Ka’bah, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered that whoever did not have a sacrificial animal should come out of the state of Ihram. So those who did not have a sacrificial animal came out of Ihram, and the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also did not have a sacrificial animal, so they too came out of Ihram. Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that due to menstruation, I could not perform the Tawaf of the House (Ka’bah). When the night of Hasab came, I said,“O Messenger of Allah! People will return after performing both Umrah and Hajj, but I will return after performing only Hajj.”The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,“Did you not perform Tawaf when you came to Makkah?”I said,“No.”So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,“Go with your brother to Tan’eem, put on the Ihram for Umrah from there, and after completing the Umrah, meet us at such-and-such place.”Umm al-Mu’minin Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said,“I think I am holding all of you back.”The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,“O barren one, did you not perform Tawaf on the day of sacrifice?”Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said,“Yes, I did.”The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,“Then there is no harm, let us go.”

In another narration from Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her), it is stated that we set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage (towards Makkah). Some of us assumed ihram for ‘Umrah, some assumed ihram for both ‘Umrah and Hajj, and some assumed ihram for only Hajj. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) assumed ihram for Hajj. So whoever assumed ihram for Hajj or for both Hajj and ‘Umrah did not come out of ihram until the day of sacrifice arrived.

`Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) (during his caliphate) used to prohibit performing Tamattu‘ and Qiran (combining Hajj and ‘Umrah). So when Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saw this, he put on the Ihram for both Hajj and ‘Umrah together and said: ((Labbayka bi ‘umratin wa hajjatin)) (that is, he performed Qiran), and said that I cannot abandon the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) because of anyone’s statement.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) says that (in the days of ignorance) people used to think that performing Umrah during the days of Hajj was worse than all the evils in the world, and they would consider the month of Muharram as the month of Safar, and would say that when the wound on the camel’s back (which often occurred due to the saddle being tied on it during the journey of Hajj) healed and the mark completely disappeared and Safar had passed, then at that time Umrah was permissible for the one who wished to perform Umrah. So when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the companions, having donned the Ihram for Hajj on the morning of the fourth of Dhul-Hijjah, arrived in Makkah, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered the companions to break this Ihram and instead assume Ihram for Umrah. This seemed bad to those people, and they said,“O Messenger of Allah! What should we do to come out of Ihram?”The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:“Everything.”

Umm al-Mu'mineen Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him), asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What is the matter with the people that they have come out of ihram after performing 'umrah, but you (peace be upon him) have not come out of ihram after performing 'umrah?" The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, "I have matted my hair and put a garland on my sacrificial animal, therefore I cannot come out of ihram until I have performed the sacrifice."

Narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man asked him about Tamattu’ and said that people had forbidden him from it. So Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) instructed him to perform Tamattu’ with peace of mind. The man said,“Then I saw in a dream as if someone was saying to me: ‘Hajj is excellent and ‘Umrah is accepted.’”So I related this dream to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he said,“This is the Sunnah of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), (do it with eagerness).”

Narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he performed Hajj with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when he (the Prophet) had brought the sacrificial animal with him, and all the companions had assumed Ihram for Hajj Mufrad. So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to them: "You people should perform Tawaf of the Ka'bah and Sa'i between Safa and Marwah, then come out of Ihram and cut your hair, then remain out of Ihram until the eighth (of Dhul-Hijjah), then you should assume Ihram for Hajj, and the Ihram with which you have come, make it for Tamattu'." The companions said: Should we make it Tamattu' even though we have mentioned Hajj (in our intention)? So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Do whatever I command you. If I had not brought the sacrificial animal, I would have done as I am commanding you, but now I cannot come out of Ihram until the sacrificial animal reaches its place of sacrifice."

Tamattu' was practiced in the Prophet's time
Narrated Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him): We performed (Hajj) Tamattu‘ during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the same command regarding it was revealed in the Qur’an, but a person said whatever he wished according to his own opinion.
