Chapter: Asking Allah for Well-being
Hadith Number: 724
It is narrated from Awsat bin Ismail, may Allah have mercy on him, that after the death of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), I heard Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) say: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood in this very place where I am standing in the first year of Hijrah. Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) began to weep, and then said:“Adhere to truthfulness, for it is with righteousness, and both of them lead to Paradise. And beware of lying, for it is with wickedness, and both of them lead to the Fire. And ask Allah for well-being, for after faith and certainty, nothing is better than well-being. Do not sever relations with one another. Do not turn your backs on one another, nor envy or bear malice towards one another, and be, O servants of Allah, brothers to one another.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a man who was supplicating: "O Allah! I ask You for complete blessing." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you know what complete blessing is?" He replied: Complete blessing is that a servant enters Paradise and is saved from Hellfire. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by another man who was saying: "O Allah! I ask You for patience." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have asked your Lord for calamity; instead, ask for well-being." He passed by another person who was saying: "O Possessor of Majesty and Honor." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Ask Allah for something."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) that I said: O Messenger of Allah! Teach me a supplication through which I may ask Allah Almighty. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Abbas! Ask Allah Almighty for well-being (aafiyah)." After some time had passed, I again came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Teach me a supplication through which I may ask. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Abbas! O uncle of the Messenger of Allah! Ask Allah Almighty for well-being (aafiyah) in this world and the Hereafter."

Chapter: Disliking Supplication for Calamity
Hadith Number: 727
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man supplicated in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Allah! You have not given me wealth with which I can give charity, so put me in some calamity in which there is reward for me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Subhan Allah! You do not have the strength to bear calamity. Why did you not supplicate like this: O Allah, grant us goodness in this world, and goodness in the Hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the Fire."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to a man who had become so weak from illness that he was like a plucked bird. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pray to Allah or ask Him (for health)." He began to say: O Allah! Whatever punishment You have destined for me in the Hereafter, give it to me quickly in this world. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Subhan Allah! You cannot bear that. Why did you not pray: O Allah! Grant us goodness in this world, and goodness in the Hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the Fire." Then he prayed, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, granted him healing.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fast one day in every month." I said: May my parents be sacrificed for you, please allow me to do more. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "More, more, fast two days in every month." I submitted: May my parents be sacrificed for you, please allow me to do more, I have the strength for more than this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have the strength for more, I have the strength for more." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept me quiet until I thought that he would never allow more than this. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fast three days in every month."
