It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: Whoever, in whose presence a believer is backbitten and he helps him, Allah Almighty will reward him in this world and the Hereafter. And whoever, in whose presence a Muslim is backbitten and he does not help him, that is, does not defend him, Allah Almighty will give him an evil recompense in this world and the Hereafter. And no one has put a worse morsel in his mouth than backbiting a believer. If he says something about him which he knows, then he has backbitten him, and if he says something about him which he does not know, then he has slandered him.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He (peace be upon him) came to two graves, the inhabitants of which were being punished. He (peace be upon him) said: "They are not being punished for a major sin. Yes, it is indeed a major sin (but they did not consider it major). One of them used to backbite people, and the other did not protect himself from urine." Then he (peace be upon him) asked for one or two fresh twigs, broke them, and ordered that each piece be planted on a grave. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Soon their punishment will be lightened as long as they remain fresh or do not dry out."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qais (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Amr bin Al-Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) was passing by with some of his companions when they came across a dead mule, which had swollen due to being dead for a long time. He said: "By Allah, for any of you to eat this until he fills his stomach is better than eating the flesh of a Muslim."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Ma'iz bin Malik Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) came and requested the enforcement of punishment due to adultery. Upon his fourth visit, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had him stoned. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by him with some of his companions, and two men among the companions said: "This treacherous man kept coming to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeatedly. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept sending him back until he died a dog's death." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent until he passed by a dead donkey, whose leg was raised due to bloating. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Both of you eat from this." They said: "Shall we eat from a dead donkey, O Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What you have just said about your brother is worse than this. By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, he is now diving in one of the rivers of Paradise."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Ubada bin Walid bin ‘Ubada bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that I went out with my father. At that time, I was a young boy. We met an elderly man who was wearing a sheet and a Ma’afiri cloth, and his slave was also dressed in the same way. I said,“Uncle! What is the harm if you give this striped sheet to your slave and take the other sheet from him? In this way, you would have two similar sheets, and the slave would have the striped sheet.”Hearing this, he turned to my father and asked,“Is this your son?”He replied,“Yes.”He placed his hand on my head and said,“May Allah bless him.”I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:“Feed them (your slaves) what you eat yourself, and clothe them with what you wear yourself.”My nephew! I prefer that the things of this world leave me rather than that they take anything from my provisions for the Hereafter. I asked,“Father! Who is this man?”He said,“This is Sayyiduna Abu al-Yasar Ka‘b bin ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him).”

It is narrated from Muhammad bin Ziyad, may Allah have mercy on him, that he said: I found the Salaf (the Companions and the Followers) living with their families in the same house. Whenever any of them had a guest and their pot was cooking, the one with the guest would take it for his guest. When the owner of the pot found the pot missing, he would ask, "Who has taken the pot?" The one with the guest would say, "We have taken it for the guest." The owner of the pot would say, "May Allah bless you in it," or would say words to that effect. Baqiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, said that Muhammad said: And when they baked bread, it would be the same, and there was only a bamboo wall between their houses. Baqiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, said: And I also found my teacher Muhammad and his companions upon this way.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as a guest. The Prophet (peace be upon him) sent a message to his wives asking if they had anything to eat to send. They replied that they had nothing except water. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:“Who will take this person with him or who will host him?”An Ansari man said: I will take him with me. He took him to his wife and said: Honor the guest of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). She said: We have nothing except the food for the children. He said: Prepare the food, fix the lamp at the time of eating (and extinguish it), and if the children ask for dinner, put them to sleep. So she prepared the food and fixed the lamp well and put the children to sleep. Then she got up as if to fix the lamp, but she extinguished it. And both of them made him believe that they were eating, although both spent the night hungry. In the morning, they went to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). He said:“Allah laughed at or was pleased with your good deed.”And Allah revealed the verse: «وَيُؤْثِرُونَ عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ وَلَوْ كَانَ بِهِمْ خَصَاصَةٌ ۚ وَمَن يُوقَ شُحَّ نَفْسِهِ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ» [الحشر: 9] “They give preference to others over themselves, even though they are in need. And whoever is saved from the greed of his soul, it is those who are successful.”

And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honor his guest with special hospitality.”The narrator asked: O Messenger of Allah! How long is the special hospitality? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:“A day and a night, and hospitality is for three days, and whatever is beyond that is charity for him.
