It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "It is not lawful for a Muslim man to shun his brother for more than three days. When they meet, one turns his face this way and the other that way, and the better of the two is the one who greets (with salam) first."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man passed by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was sitting in a gathering. He said: «السلام علیکم» . The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ten good deeds (were written for him)." Then another man passed by and he said: «السلام علیکم ورحمۃ اللہ» ! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(For him) there are twenty good deeds." Then a third man passed by and he said: «السلام علیکم ورحمۃ اللہ وبرکاتہ» ! Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(He) received thirty good deeds." Then a person got up from the gathering and left without saying salam, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How quickly your companion forgets! When any of you comes to a gathering, let him say salam. If he thinks it appropriate, let him sit down, and when he gets up, let him say salam, for the first salam is not more important than the second."

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) would say: «السلام علیکم ورحمۃ اللہ» and they would say: «السلام علیکم ورحمۃ اللہ وبرکاتہ» . Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Today, people have surpassed us greatly in virtue.

Through another chain, it is also narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) in a similar manner.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he said that they used to pray behind the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), when a man said: «السلام على اللہ» "Peace be upon Allah." When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) finished the prayer, he said: Who said, "Peace be upon Allah"? Allah Himself is Peace. Rather, you should say: «التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ» All verbal, physical, and financial acts of worship are for Allah alone. O Prophet, peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah. And I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger. Then he said: The Companions used to learn it in this way as one of you learns a surah from the Qur'an.
